A few quotes from the article.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has raised the prospect of driverless trains as the future of the London Underground network.

The mayor has been in dispute with the RMT and TSSA unions over 800 jobs due to go in ticket offices.

Four strikes have been held with another minor strike due at 2100 GMT.

Mr Johnson said: "When the Jubilee Line is complete there will be three lines in London which operate on an automated system.

"It is a fact that as we speak most of the Jubilee Line runs under automatic operation.

"The driving of the train is done by computer, rather than manually."

Mr Johnson said trains still needed one member of staff aboard, as on the Docklands Light Railway.

Bob Crow, RMT general secretary, said: "Boris Johnson's comments show he has complete and utter contempt for the tens of thousands of staff who ensure safe transport for millions of Londoners every day of the week.

"It is clear he is planning to sack thousands of Tube drivers and that act of provocation will be met with fierce resistance.

"Suggesting that drunken bankers and grandees can drive Tube trains is a disgrace."

Mr Crow added: "Next week RMT will have a two day strike on DLR that will shut it entirely."

Now is it just me or is Crow playing right into the arms of TfL.

TfL know that a strike can shut the tube so it is only reasonable to assume that they look at alternatives, such a driver less trains. Is it a case of Bob Crow ignoring the repercussion of his actions or the case that he is oblivious to them?

Bob Crow is a rat.

As much as I think everyone has the right to be in a union to stick up for themselves I think he is damages the perception of unions in general.

It's easy for him to bang on about peoples rights when he is on his mega salary: hardly the struggling working man.

P.S I'm in a unoin myself and always have been:)

This time round i agree with everything Boris Johnson said. I am sick to the back teeth with these strikes. The people of London are sick of it too. The sooner they kick the lefty scum out the better and we'll have a network system to be proud of. I swear it's holding back London being a better capital city then it could be.

They should be disbanded the same way the miners were in the 80's

Why keep a member of staff on board, why not go fully automated like some parts of the world?

Surely driving a tube train isn't particular difficult? It's a choice between start/stop and how fast.

There's a lot they need to know, for those circumstances where you really want someone to know what they are doing. A friend of mine is currently training with LUL and he says the difference between driving a train compared to a car is night and day (with the train being much more demanding to clarify :p)

Surely driverless trains were always on the cards eventually? Can Bob really imagine thousands of tube divers in a few decades in London? I swear they think tube drivers should be completely immune to everything! Only on boxing day (correct me If I am wrong), I saw some union member demanding staff should be getting 3 times their normal rate of pay and a day in lieu for just working boxing day.

£40,000 (*though is this an average salary or maximum?) for a 35-hour week, 43 days' annual leave and free staff travel for themselves and their spouse.

*either way - it isn't a bad salary!

I am all for unions but some are militant these days and strike over nothing or their leaders just like to hear their own voice on TV!

It's the 21st Century surely we should be moving towards driver less trains? Removes human error and all that...

Oh and a computer can't strike.

Bob Crow is a loud-mouth **** who loves stiring trouble up with his "common" man rhetoric whilst being paid bucket loads.

Now I'm not a fan over Governments interfering with the rights to legitimate strikes (and protests) but this guy just wants to cause trouble if you ask me.

You still need an operator to be on board for things like tickets. I use the DLR daily, and sometimes the PSA (aka driver) has to manually take over the train because it "forgets" where it is or something. If the PSA wasn't on the train, and it did that.. the passengers would have to wait until someone walked along the track or similar.

It's all well and good to say "Just let them be fully auto" but it's a safe bet that the moment something goes wrong, the lynch mob will cry "Why wasn't there someone operating the train?"

Bob Crow is a militant union dinosaur who lives in the past. He damages the union, his members, the London economy and Londoners. He’s met his match with Boris. Boris has played a great card with this number on driverless trains. It may just be another ploy to resolve current issues but I can see Boris doing this after he wins the 2012 election. Go Boris go!

Other parts of the world run full auto systems with no issue though, and just a central control room to control everything

The brilliant thing is, once they are replaced by these new trains the buggers can strike all they like but the trains will keep on running!

I personally can't wait!

Sums up my views. Can not stand the man, he's a moron.

One of the main positive reasons of turning to automated transport is so that you won't have train strikes, and it will be a constant, reliable service.

So his response to stop them sacking his drivers is... to strike.

Unbelievable... :p

I say bring on the Automation! :p

Not only that these lazy buggers get paid good money...something like £40k a yr to sit in a train.

The day the underground becomes driverless will be the day i will rejoice...its about time they did something to counter act Crow and his militancy...the guy lives in a nice big house, gets paid lots of money for essentially deciding when to strike etc...nice little gig he has there and yet he doesnt have to suffer the tubes day in day out....i dont think the stupid moron quite realises just how difficult it is to get around london without the tube...the buses are useless as it is so i feel sorry for the people who rely on the tubes to get to and from work...luckily for me i can get to my office via DLR if need be.

Crow is one annoying big **** tbqh.
