Track Car Project

Got any trackdays booked yet?

My next one is end of Jan. Nothing more than an aftermarket oil cooler and R888s for me.

There's a track day in May at Croft which is going to be our target to have the car ready for. To be honest I'm really enjoying working on the car, hence how we keep finding things to do to it over the winter. I must admit it will be good to finally get out and drive it though.

Good choice of track day car. Too many people go out buying something either expensive and powerful or complex and powerful but then either stack it or never get it running well. Power doesn't directly = fun on a track. i'd say something like a Puma should be great fun as it will let you get close to your personal limits relatively easily.

Resist the temptation to spend too much more on the car though. One of you probably will stack it sooner or later. If you start getting into spending much more it might be worth considering getting a formula ford or similar!

Today was the day we got all of the bits and pieces needed together and connected up our throttle bodies. We are still using the stock ECU and the MAF isn't connected so we weren't expecting it to run well, if at all.

We had everything connected up and plumbed in by 5PM, so we anxiously turned the engine over to see what would happen. Surprisingly it started straight up, the idle was lumpy but it revved well. Obviously it probably won't rev this well when the engine is under load without the MAF connected or a aftermarket ECU.

The plan is to buy a megasquirt ECU and get it installed, setup and tuned. We still don't have the throttle cable connected and we need to set up an air filter on the throttle bodies, but overall we are pleased with how it's going so far, expecially since this is the first time we have ever attempted anything like this.

I have added some pics of the setup below, there is also a video but the sound quality isn't great as it was just too loud for my phone camera. It sounds awesome though, a very raw and throaty sound.

Oooo, cool thread bro :D

I've missed this one somehow. Looks like a cool project and will keep an eye out for it :)

I may have an MS1 V3 if you are intersted?

I love ITB's! Did yoy just cut the original intake manifold down and use silicone tube to connect up these bodies?

Yep we took the plunge last week and just went at the original intake with an angle grinder, was no going back then, the angles and fitment have worked out well though.

I literally know almost nothing about megasquirt at the moment so there is going to have to be a lot of reading done before I know what I'm going to need, but it's certainly an offer I'll consider if it turns out to be what I need.

Does anybody have any advice to lend on megasquirt if you know what I'll be needing?

We got the throttle cable connected up tonight and took it for a spin. Interestingly it drives pretty well. It seems that with the MAF disconnected the ECU reverts to a base map based on throttle position sensor readings and runs very rich to stop the engine melting.

It's quite jerky low down in the revs but once you're moving it revs all the way to the redline with no flat spots. You can tell it's running rich as it doesn't rev as freely as it could, but it's perfectly driveable, just not as powerful as it could be.

The priority now is to get megasquirt up and running so that we can get a good map on there, and add cams and a ported and polished head to make the most of it.

The sound is truly awesome. I stood on the drive and Phil took it for a quick spin. From half a mile away I could hear every gear change and blip of the throttle, the induction raw sounds just like a rally car.

There are a few minor tweaks to make and relocation of the IAT sensor, but I think we're in a pretty good position, the cost so far has only been roughly £160.

Just wanted something a bit crazy to match the character of the car, as I said we're not taking the styling too serious so expect lots of stickers and random paint.

You need an 'incredible hulk' sticker with all that green! :D :p I've not seen a Puma at trackday so it's nice to see something a little different. :)

Possibly, I'm guessing you would need some sort of actuator to mechanically open the throttle based on the ECU's outputs.

This is why its so expensive to put throttle bodies on the Fiesta ST (£2800 :o), the bodies, manifold bit and butterflies themselves are relatively cheap but the calibrated stepper motor assembly you need to move the throttles is the expensive and complicated part, not exactly standardized or readily available either, where available it seems to have been designed and developed from scratch rather than just bought from jenvey or whoever else with the rest of the bits. Cable throttle is easy peezy...one ponders whether converting to cable throttle and running a relatively basic aftermarket management setup would be almost comparable to the price DRM charge for the Fiesta.

What is used to operate the single throttle body on the Fiesta? Could this system be removed and modified to work on the ITB's?

As promised a short video of the test run recorded on my friends iPhone. Sound isn't great but better than the last video.

Are you going to move your oil vent for your rocker? I wouldnt want it that near to my air filter. Can you re-route it into a catch tank or something?

Great work, i do have a soft spot for these cars!

Yes it's most likely going to be routed off to the left of the engine bay. The oil feed used to go directly in to the air intake though as part of the pcv emissions system so it won't be doing any harm in it's current location.

looks like it should be good... one thing to bare in mind with ITB's is you may get to a point on some tracks where you'll be too loud at WOT high up the rev range.

Certainly with S2000's running ITB's and anything remotely different exhaust wise you had to go to 105dB track days to stand a chance

You will also need to get the trumpet length right to make sure its actually making some power rather than just sounding good!

Has anyone done it before who you can ask?

I have seen a few Pumas on track before, a standard fettled one was going round as quick as a FRP!
