I'd like to make some really nice burgers - and I also like to be sure there's 0 carbs in them, as I'm following a ketonic diet.

I did try using the food mixer today with some steaks from Tesco, but the result wasn't what I was looking for. I've done a bit of googling and I know what I'm looking for as far as the meat is concerned, and how to cook it just right.

What I need though is a way of grinding beef (and perhaps lamb) down to burgers.

I've had a look and any cheap mincers I can see have terrible reviews - they don't work, they don't attach, they rust etc.

I'm not really too keen on spending more than £20 on it... should I forget it at that price?

Would it not be easier to just buy mince from the supermarket or your local butchers then mix in whatever seasoning you fancy

There doesn't seem to be the choice that I'm after, and I'd like to try doing it myself to see if I can get something really good.

Fair enough I know nothing about meat mincers so cant help there but if you dont manage to find a decent one I know a lot of butchers will mince things to your specification as in the cuts you want and any extras such as offal you want adding.

Don't get one with a suction cap, whatever you do. The cast iron clamp on ones should do it. Of course they will rust if you leave them about wet :)

Personally these days I use my food processor instead of my grinder. I like my burger mince really chunky, so just pulse a few times, checking each time till it's the consistency I like.

I usually use topside for burgers, but venison is certainly something you should also check out ;)

I have a mincing attachment for my mixer , also made them in my processor but the texture is different

My butcher minces my meat when I ask him to. Don't see why you wouldn't just get yours to, he doesn't add anything to the meat. Far easier doing that than buying a purpose made meat mincer.

For that price is would go for a hand powered one, no idea which though. I really want one, but it's a £100 for the Kenwood one I want.

Is this mincer any good?

I had a look at a site that sells a great deal of things, and I read the reviews of around 10 different hand powered mincers.

It seems that they're not fit for purpose. Positive reviews are hard to find, and the negative reviews are overwhelming.

I'll just stick to buying minced beef I think. Not worth spending £100 on I don't think.

I don't pay a huge amount of attention on user reviews, people are stupid and a lot of issues is they didn't read the description or follow instructions. There's a lot of hand grinders on Amazon for ~£20 some with pretty good user reviews as well, also remember you have SOGA so if it's not fit for purpose.

Easier to go to the butcher and get him to do it for you. I've often done this myself to make my own burgers. However if you do go for one, just go for a hand grinder one.

However, in reality a lot of the mince you get from the shops aren't that bad - though clearly getting the steak freshly minced means you can have it blue which you can't do with supermarket mince.
