Zotac 1280mb for £189.99?

Was going to go 58xx or 68xx or possibly wait for the 1Gb 69xx. Had an ATi (4850 then current 4870 1Gb) for 3 years but I have no allegiance (nor problems) to either camp (apart from the green camp rebranding which made me throw a few toys out the pram back in the day).

Gaming at 1920x1080 and also considered a 460 1Gb which can be had for ridiculously low prices if you shop around. Was just about to buy the MSI Twin Frozr 5850 from here until I read about a few problems and more alarmingly, the cold treatment on the RMAs, though this is surely a tiny %age of units sold? Noticed the price keeps varying daily too :\

Man, 2½-3 years ago, it was "no brainer ... 4850" but I seem to be just mulling far too much over this.

Oh, I'm not looking for mega-fps (benchies @300fps are preposterous in multiplayer terms IMO). Smoothness playing Blops (4870 is cracking with everything full on, with shadows off, put em on and micro-stutter in certain situations) and will want to play RO:HoS (proven engine, shouldn't be a problem) and Crysis2 (played original on an 8600GT with med settings then again with 4850 with well decent settings).

A gtx 470 is a steal for that price. Wait a week or two for 560 and see the price fluctuation

+1

Dont just discount the 6950 I will vouch for its performance at high detail settings being much better than the 5850@875/1250.

Performance issues with Black Ops isn't specific to your hardware btw the game has serious performance issues with over 70% of hardware configurations.

A 470 at that price is pretty good, as for Black ops, it does have a few issues, to get it to run anyway smooth i have to disable sli, with sli enabled its very jerky.

Yeah, quite a nice price. I was umming and arring about getting a gtx470 a few weeks ago but was really impressed by it and the price (£163 inc Mafia 2). Mine runs at less than 40 degC when browsing the net and often only 28-32 degC when fully idle with a custom fan profile (30%). Unigine heaven benchmark 75 deg C @760/1730 stock volts.

Not played black ops but battlefield bad company 2 @1920*1080 at max settings is lovely and smooth. A 1GB EVGA GTX 460 SUPER OVERCLOCK can be had for as little as £137! Worth shopping around as ocuk prices on NVIDIA cards aren't the most competitive at the moment unfortunately.

For a ton more, I would sincerely hope so!

Thx for replies ... I'm well aware of Blops hardware woes, not a very good example to state I suppose but nevertheless, a game I still play.

Seems all the mentioned units are about one of the same performance-wise (ish, I don't bench much), seems I'll no doubt go for whatever reports good temps and good price :)

Well a 6950 can be had for £235, so £45 more than the GTX 470. For gaming at 1920*1080 a gtx 470 would be perfect. Even a 1gb gtx 460 should hold its own and both overclock immensely.

Since posting, had a look at some reviews. Performance-wise, meh, without benchmarking I wouldn't know what was under the hood so to speak, however, the consensus seems to be that the 5850 (for example) is quieter, cooler and has a fair deal of overclocking potential. Also mentioned is the 6850 in comparison to both of those that this may be the way to go, newer tech at the very least.

I don't think I could justify a 6950. I can see it's a top unit, especially with the 6970 bios flash for "free". More longevity yes, but I got 2 years out of present GPU for (at the time price) £190 so if I paid even sub-£150, I wouldn't mind upgrading in a years time.

Appreciate the help fella :)

Edit since replying and @Wu-Tang: Man, that's one ugly card! Looking at the reviews there and elsewhere (I had considered this card a couple of weeks back), its cheap. I would rather have this over that tbh :)

Only if your not overclocking, an overclocked 470 will leave the 5870 in its dust.

With the GTX 560 just around the corner, why even bother with the 470 until it's seen how powerful this card is?. The reason being that the GTX 570 is equal (roughly) to the GTX 480 so if the trend continues there will be a more efficient GPU that might be just as good as the GTX 470 with less heat also.

@JD, aye m8, saw that thread (mentioned in Op but never referenced to it), put me well off :(

Same here m8, that MSI 5850 was en route to me then I changed my mind before it arrived and bought the rig in sig as a stop gap gaming rig until April/May.

I like to tinker with my stuff but all I seen was a flooding of not so happy people in that thread so I was like you, well put off.

No it wont. It will close the gap and make its fair amount of wins, but to say the 5870 gets left in the dust is wrong I'm afraid.

+1 both cards are fairly evenly matched.

That vtx 5870 is a great price and from a few user reviews its cooler is quite a bit better than the reference design cooler although it did hit a few branches on the way down the ugly tree.

Would you care to back this up with some evidence? Or have you just got your 470 specs on again? :D

I can't see anything at all of OC'd 470s leaving OC'd 5870s for dust lal.

Doesn't really matter cos the card is 'ugly'.

At that price/performance - I don't think you will match it tbh but....
