It's a "special edition" but look at most 306's for sale it seems to be the most common!
£1000 budget + 300 miles each week + current petrol prices = EASILY a 306 HDi diesel.
I've not heard of a turbo going on a HDI and i've only read of a couple of people changing injectors (based on experience of pug306.net, many hdi drivers, most of them tuned to some extent so under more strain than standard)
That link about engines 306 is shocking, anyone who makes a point about saying all a gti6s power is at three top has blatantly never driven one, the gearbox means that once you're about 2.5k recalling if you press the floor it the power is there straight away.
It's not actually got a b16 Honda vtec lol engine....
I don't know how hdis handle but if its anything like my gti6 on **** tyre then its on to a winner
Is it the older d-turbo's where you can basically up the boost by a screw-driver and a small screw like thing in the engine compartment?

I'd say all the power is above 4500rpm in the car.
Its no faster than a normal 2 litre n/a car until then, if anything slower IMO!
.
You do need to factor in the potential common rail diesel issues (Turbo, injectors) but otherwise i agree.
I think this is an older common rail design which doesn't use high pressure piezoelectic injectors which is likely to make them much much less susceptible to failure. Not sure much the fuel system or turbo is going to be under stress given the low power output of the engine.
