Presently using a NVidia 8800GT and ran a test using 3D Mark 06 earlier. Gave me score of 10755 (0-11 fps during the cpu test of the robots and the temple).

Just swapped it for a GTX 460 and ran the test again. THis time got a score of 11684.

To me, either something else is being factored into things as I surely should be getting a better score than that?

Should I have removed and reinstalled any existing drivers (same ones according to NVidia website) or anything else?

I have just installed a 460 (768) and i get approx 17000 on 3d06 so think you should get more than you are getting now assuming you have a decent CPU.

Have you got your AA and AF off when running test

AMD 965(3.4) 4 core
Windows 7

I did the exact same change as yourself and it's in the games where the difference is. BFBC2 I couldn't run all effects and AA with the 8800GT, now I can, even up to 4xAA and still get a decent frame rate at 1680x1050.

Theres clearly a problem with that score. By the look of the op you didn't uninstall drivers when your old card was in then reinstall new ones when your new card was in?

Had to reinstall Windows 7 when I got my 460, despite using the latest drivers with an older 6 series Nvidia card before that.

Then again I'm sure Driver Sweeper messed up my drivers some how.

No problems as far as I'm aware.
Only played Monkey Island and some Fallout: New Vegas @ 1280x1024 (or whatever) as my 17" monitor supports up to that.

Must admit during bootup it's about 80-90% quieter fan wise!

Seems a very tight squeeze getting the 6 pin power connectors to it. The one from my psu is slightly wide and used the narrower molex to 6 pin connector that came with the card as I could be bothered going into the loft for the proper cable.
