Well not a toy so much, but still shiny and quite pretty :D

Some context - basically it sits over the open passenger side of the cockpit and "reduces drag".... yeah, not really buying that either to be honest! Basically it's just there for the bling factor and to match my carbon half-doors

I only have this and this showing it on the car, neither of which are great angles. I borrowed one from a mate last year which was a mistake, had no choice but to buy my own after that :D

I'm glad that you're under no illusions that it is only for bling, because some plyboard/cardboard and ingenuity would be lighter and work just as well :p

It'll look really cool I'm sure :) Post more pics when it's fitted please.

edit: oh, it's even replacing a current insert, go on, how much lighter is it? Or is most of the weight reduction to your wallet :p

I suppose you could argue it's replaced a passenger seat, in which case it's many times lighter. I haven't weighed it yet though.

Having said that, I've got a low back Tillett to fit under the cover so there goes any weight saving! I'm surprised my wallet hasn't floated away by now :o

They do reduce drag. Lotus has been fitting them to Seven's and their other early Type Model cars for years. Also the 2-11 has them as an option. Also make covering the car up easier if there's a brief rain shower.

I've just had another brain-wave for an alternative to getting a clip-in cover:

Clingfilm :D

Carbon fibre. There's something just blingtastic about it that makes buying the stuff addictive. My RSV is dripping with CF, I've got a huge pile of replaced standard parts in a box in the loft. :D

Yeah there is a tiny benefit for sure, but really (and especially with 7 shape cars) the major limiting factors are elsewhere. The car is about as aerodynamic as a brick, on the whole. Maybe the racers can take comfort from an extra hundredth a lap, but for me it's just nice to look at!

For those that asked for some pictures once fitted...

Just need to fit the poppers for the front edge now. It's amazing how much more snug in the car you feel with the tonneau and the half-doors on :)

Surely those wing mirror clamps aren't legal  They look sharp!

Looks tidy. And I agree that "feeling snug" is good in cars like this :D I get the same feeling from the hard top on my liz :)

Windscreens are for girls :p

On a totally unrelated question, How do you find that mx5 to drive?

I really don't like it. The engine is weak (2 litre), the gear ratios are too long (5 speed), the handling is ropey (incredible amount of dive under braking, lots of body roll, the way the car reacts to small inputs on the throttle and steering scares the crap out of me sometimes), the fly-by-wire throttle is too vague, and the steering wheel is too big (maybe I'm nit-picking now, but you did ask!).

On the other hand, the brakes are decent and the steering is good. It's also a fairly nice place to be inside but the roof creaks a bit and there's a lot of wind noise.

I drove the current generation MX5 at Silverstone last year and thought it was much, much better. Mainly due to revised suspension, 6 speed box and new engine. The one in my pics is a very early Mk3. My parents love it though :)
