Had my current phone for nearly three years now, an LG KG800. Decided I could do with an upgrade and so I am looking into the smartphones. The thing is, I don't actually use my phone so much, I'm looking to upgrade mainly for the 'gadget' aspect of the smartphone with all of the apps/games and such you can get these days, plus, I can use it as an MP3 player aswell so I don't have to carry both around (and you can get Spotify so I'm assuming you can use it as you would on the PC and listen to anything you feel like).

Which smartphones are the best around at the moment? Three seems like the best network to go with for a contract, although I have always bought pay as go you phones and never had a contact before. With contracts and the fact that you are tied into them for so many months, can you upgrade your phone within the months you are tied to? Eg. say I buy a smartphone and the contract is 24 months and a phone comes out that I like say a year down the line, could I upgrade to that phone or would I have to wait until the 24 months that I am tied to for the original phone are up?

So yes, can you recommend which smartphones to be looking at atm, which networks are worth considering and how a contract works (more specifically the question I asked above).

I want a smartphone for the reasons most people seem to use them these days, basically as a small handheld computer type thing, everyone uses them for the apps/games/facebook/twitter.

I would say recommending me that naff £20 Nokia is more useless than a smartphone ever could be because a basic phone is just that, a phone, and it's the features of a smartphone I want, moreso than the actual phone itself.

How does Pay as you go work with smartphones? Surely they offer that option so you don't have to be on a contract and can still own one if you want to without being tied down.

You wouldn't use PAYG with a smartphone because you'd get shafted for bandwidth.
High street retailers don't even offer startphones on PAYG.

I'm merely making you question whether those extra features are worth paying ~5000% more for a phone.

It's fine if you think they are worth it - I don't :)

Whats with Three and Orange (Dolphin) offering pay and go simcards that give you like 500mb internet usage and such then?

Surely you could just buy a phone for however much it costs, £150-£200 (which I don't mind, I can afford it). Then just put one of those simcards in... then you have a smartphone on pay and go. At least thats how I assumed it works.

Ok, I think I'm getting confused. I was under the impression that those Orange 'animal' things were pay and go, it seems everything has changed these days with phones (I've not bought one in that long, lol). It seems everything classed as 'pay as you go', or well, the best way to buy a 'pay as you go' phone is now on a pay monthly scheme where you top up your phone by so much per month and you get so many minutes/internet usage amount etc.

But yeah, I want something where each month I can top up my phone and get a certain amount of internet usage/phone calls and so on. Basically, a decent amount of each one, moreso the internet as thats what I want the phone for, all of the internet based stuff.

Take a look at giff gaff? Its a sim only monthly deal.. can choose how much you want to spend and each amount gives different texts/mins/internet. And this allows you to purchase any phone you wish as long as its unlocked.

If you go this route, have a look at Motorola DEFY, its a decent allround Android handset, the only let down being the camera but surely if people were so into taking photos they'd purchase a HD camera for around £150 and not a phone.

I don't see why using a smartphone on PAYG is a bad idea? With o2 if you top up £15 or more a month then you get a month unlimited browsing and 500mb download plus free texts. (Text&Web) Then you still have your credit left to do what you please with it whether that be more browsing or whatever.

You mean sim only contracts?

Yeah, I guess so. That GiffGaff looks to be the best deal at the moment due to the fact there looks to be no limit on internet usage. Does that include downloads and such? As I will be using Spotify a lot, one of the main reasons I want a smartphone tbh.

Also, what does teathering mean?

If you're topping up £15 a month it's not really PAYG is it.

Well yeah coz you can stop whenever you like and choose how much money you want. If however you want continuous internet browsing and downloads then you'd top up 15 a month.

Hi d3moliti0n,

The PAYG tariff you appear to be referring to is our PAYG Dolphin plan. This gives you 300 texts and 100MB of data a month with a £10.00 top up. Further data bundles can be added at a later date if required.

Have you considered a SIM only agreement? These are on a rolling 30 day basis but give you an inclusive allowance similar to fixed term contracts. Have a look at www.orange.co.uk.

Hope this helps!
