Install two PSU's or buy a new single 1000watt PSU for running SLI GTX 580

If you can sli two 580's then you can certainly afford a 1000 watt psu

I seen a addon psu but can't find some thing like it in the uk.

Its called a FSP Group Booster X5 450W Dedicated Multi.GPU Power supply think it was around $80

Anygood i might get one myself if i get another 5870 :D

It's an easy choice.

Do you need the power of a second GTX 580 due to limitations in your gaming?. If yes, then start researching to find a PSU that is running a similar set up and then buy the cheapest one. Followed by selling your current PSU to regain some money.

If there is no limitation in your gaming then quit whining about money and buy what's needed. If you want it, buy the GTX and PSU. If you don't want to spend more money and already receive a great gaming experience from the card you've got then I don't understand why you'd even mention not wanting to spend the money in the first place?. Are you trying to talk yourself out of doing it but then asking us for a whole pointless thread?. If so then could you turn your head to the side as I slap you firmly on the cheek?.

I'm not being provocative, though my text may seem that way. It's just if it's not needed for your gaming and you have strict rules on getting what you want, then no matter what anyone said in this thread, you're going to do what you want anyway and ignore what others are saying whilst talking yourself out of it from the start. Sorry for giving you a hard time chaparral, no pain = no gain. ;)

sell the old psu on the MM.
Not worth selling my PSU on the MM..

As i live in guernsey and i would have to pay 20% VAT on the price i got for it if i sent it to england plus a very high postage charge :(

For Example
Say i got £50 for it on MM

£50
-£10 VAT
- £15 postage
I end up with only getting about £25

LOL :D

I would have thought 6970s in crossfire would have made more sense (or flashed 6950s?) as they get right up next to 580 sli in performance for a lot less (or for the price of a single 580 if 6950s).

Ironically the HX1000 is actually two 500W PSUs in one case. You can tell by the two +12v rails, each supplying 500W and the large case. On the other hand, Corsair went with a custom design on the AX1200 with supplies a whopping 1204.8W on one +12v rail.

That's not ironic. :)

I toyed with the idea of two PSUs a while back but in the end it just seemed two complex in terms of managing the power switches etc... you'd switch the PC off but still have power going into some components or vice-versa, I could see that ending in tears unless you manage it properly in terms of hard drives etc. Plus the general hassle of having wires everywhere, having to trip the 'auxillary' psu power switch etc.

That adapter shown turns the "slave" PSU off when the main one isn't running.
