I've herd this a few times and again today.

HD device on shelves by Xmas; Media storage solution keeps retail in the mix; Third parties to help drive launch buzz

Sony isn't going to take Nintendo's 3DS challenge lying down.

The format-holder is preparing a swift reveal for the true PlayStation Portable successor, due at Christmas. As was reported yesterday, the first announcement is pencilled in for January 27th.

Most importantly: the format-holder is pitching the device as a high-end portable equivalent of its next-gen home console, with rich games content to match.

Sony has told licensees the device ‘is as powerful as the PlayStation 3’.

High-level sources told us they expect Sony to start outlining its 2011 handheld strategy within days of Nintendo events in Amsterdam and New York detailing the 3DS Easter rollout plans.

The new PSP is expected to arrive within the Q4 period, perhaps as early as October, and includes a HD screen with twin-stick controls in the familiar ‘brick’ form factor.

Sony has already consulted publishers about launch timings and the first wave of games.

It is specifically requesting richer, more in-depth content to differentiate its device from app-centric Apple and Android devices.

Plus, securing HD handheld games will help build launch excitement amongst publishers, developers and consumers over the next nine months.

Sony is already plotting to reveal more at GDC and E3 after this month’s first tease.

‘PSP2’ will even use a media format to make sure retail has a part to play in the console’s lifecycle by selling physical software.

But the device will also provide access to plenty of downloadable content, smaller games and apps via PSN – and maybe even incorporate a phone, but not as a primary function.

This next-gen PSP is separate from the games-oriented phone sister division Sony Ericsson is working on, which is due for its formal unveiling at Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress in February. That device runs Android and downloaded apps and smaller games, plus potentially older PSone titles.

I'm going to take all of this with a pinch of salt. Is it even possible to fit all that tech into something a little bigger than a mobile phone?

If true It will own the handheld market if the games are there as well as the power.

If anyone is capable of doing it I guess its Sony - but I think you are right in taking everything with a pinch of salt

With all the new mobiles abilities - its going to be very difficult to sell a games only HD machine in that kind of format (and an HD screen the size of the current psp is surely nigh on pointless isnt it?) - unless they come up with a "mobile hd" resolution - which is much less than 1080p (720p maybe?)

While I can (plainly) see the point of getting retailers on their side by using physical media, I cant see it would pay for itself with media distribution /duplication costs etc, to do it for this reason alone. I know a lot of people dont have fast internet even today (Im still physically limitied to 3Mb broadband where I live), Mini BR? limited to 10GB or something or some kind of write once flash (to make it cheaper to produce), not sure if either is actually possible

Maybe Sony are about to pull something out of a hat again that completely re-writes the rulebook, but either way 6-9 months after the 3DS is released , whatever it is will have a lot of catching upto do (and after all we are talking nintendo here, so it will sell in shed loads)

There is going to be other problems as well, if the 3DS has 3-5 hour battery life then what will this have ?

And then there is getting dev's to work on the thing, publisher dont put as much money into the mobile side of things, they are not about to give devs the money they need to make a game that takes full advantage of the power of the it

A load of tosh. They only barely managed to get it into the PS3 slim form factor, a hand held simply will not wash. I'd expect Xbox quality and nothing more.

I swear that the chips they used were leaked like over a year ago. If I remember, the hardware has between XBOX and 360 graphics, but on a screen that small it will look a hell of a lot better

Cpu requirements is all down to screen definition surely? If they have fudged the "HD" description (and to be fair to Sony they wont be the first if this is the case), then there is no need to have the same cpu as the ps3 in the first place (or cooling , or memory) etc etc etc

Remember Sony are probably the best company in the world at miniturisation, not to mention the fact that appox 1/2 the width of the ps3 is the disc tray itself (so with external media, ie flash drive etc, for the psp2 this could be totally discounted space wise)

I havent ever taken one apart - but I bet the BR drive, the hdd and the cooling take up a great proportion of the internals of the "slim" - so in essence the size and quality of the screen on the psp2 is highly dependant on 90% of the size of the unit

I think people aren't thinking about it properly, for one, when they as powerful, I'm inclined to believe they don't literally mean spec for spec, what they probably mean is it has the same graphical performance as the PS3 based on the screen resolution of the PSP2 and so on, there's no way it'll have the CPU processing power of the Cell chip.

I reckon the screen will be 720p at most, it'll be about the right res for that type of screen where you won't notice aliasing much, I'd guess they'd have to up the res compared to the PSP because the PSP's screen looks quite poor now compared to more modern devices.

Just look at how some games look on the iPhone 4 though, the PSP2 is going to be much larger than it, and therefore will have a lot more room for more powerful hardware.

Have you seen how much wasted space there is in the PS3? As has been said, a massive amount of it is taken up by the Bluray drive, and then the PSU takes up a massive amount of space as well. You should also appreciate that the PS3 is quite old now.

The 3DS I am massively looking forward to, but this... I just feel a bit meh about the whole thing. My PSP has been collecting dust for almost a year now so unless this can improve greatly on that then I don't know if I'd be interested.

The PSP was hyped to be as powerful as a PS2 too iirc.

Looking at the newest GOW game its pretty close TBH
As for PSP2, games may look as good on the smaller PSP2 screen compared with the PS3 version. The screen res wouldnt need to be as high for one thing, but it may look just as good. As for battery life modern CPUs use far less power than older ones, and a multicore CPU such as the Cell is pretty scalable, and as it supposed to use memory cards of some sort not having a drive to spin will also consume less power. I guess we have to wait till Jan 27 when its supposed to be formally announced in Japan.

All nonsense until it's physically in the hands of somebody who isn't a Sony employee.

I'm still waiting on their promise that my PS2 would be automating my home... controlling everything from the TV to the microwave and fridge.

riiigghht!

didnt they say the ps3 was the most powerful console ever, with the best graphics, if gt5 is anything to go buy, im not convinced, its on par with xbox, pc can do much better

Well it is isnt it? A PC isnt a console so its a correct statement albeit full of hyperbole.
