Taggs Mx5

Will you be buying a matching hardtop to accompany your nice new toy? Or will you just stick with the soft top?

Hard tops are 'teh super gay'.

When you buy a convertible sports car like this, it is important that you realise what the roof is for.

You do not put the roof down when the weather is nice. You put the roof UP when it is raining. That is all. It is an umbrella, not a roof.

Anything that removes the ability to drop the roof as soon as the rain stops is completely lame and thus a hardtop is also completely lame.

Even if you are going to Sainsburys at 10pm, if it isnt raining, the roof comes off.

Love it. I always think that I'd love an MX-5 but I'm not sure I'd want it as my only car and I can't really house a third car on the drive :(

This! Heck, even a bit of snow didn't put me off keeping the roof down once.

When you're 43 you become lest daft :D

You can also afford the best of both world too and have one with a hard top that folds at the push of a button and is nice and toasty when it's cold outside.....and quite a bit quieter too on the motorway. I am full of win me......or was it a tiger, I forget what to say in the mirror these days.

I urge you lot in your hot hatches to get out in one of these little MX-5's. Put away the stereotype thoughts for a bit, don't expect to have your brain bashed by the power but find a nice little country road, get the roof down and open it up. It's what 'fun' should be about really as it will move around all over the place, give you lots of feedback and show you how you don't need power to have fun. You can also add power, reduce weight and then you will have something will actually hand virtually any hot hatch it's arse all for 10k all in. Fabulous little things and I say that as someone who has had a few special motors and driven a list of very special motors.

I fully agree.... except... my sister had a Barbie car when she was young. When you washed it with warm water lots of little pink flowers appeared on it... and it was an MX5...

This image is embedded in my brain and has ruined my ability to ever want to own one.

Its a shame. Its similar to that feeling of not being able to drink a certain drink any more because you got so hammered on it one time you did stupid things, forgot a night, and were ill for 3 days.

:(

This is totally true. And Mythbusters even proved that if you're driving with the roof down and it starts to rain, you stay dryer if you just keep going than you would if you took the time to stop and put it up!

I love the MX5, and if I could put away my practicality and lack of power concerns my decision on a next car would be an easy one.

If I had one, the top would never go up - Scarfs, thick coats and woolly hats at the ready :)

Have you ever tried one?
Ive now got a new 2.0L Sport Tech MX5 after having an Astra VXR for 3 years.
I do not miss the power one bit - yes in a straight line its easily noticable but anything else the MX5 walks over the VXR for a driving experience and thats thanks to the RWD.
Granted your ST would handel better than my VXR did but its still FWD at the end of the day.
I guess if you need more than two seats though thats kind of a sticking point. :D

Oh and yes - if its not raining the roof has to be down!
To the OP - Nice car - enjoy it

Yes I've tried one (albeit a MK1) and yes I do subscribe to the driving experience it offers, still doesn't stop me wanting something a bit quicker.

I think if I bought one, it would be with plans to supercharge it and it would have to be a MK2 RS.

Nice looking car mate, looks in good condition and the wheels are nice although personally I would space them out a bit and have the car sit slightly lower as just now it is just a little awkward looking.

The MX5 interiors have always impressed me, it may not be exec level fit and finish but they always look good and even the Mk1's has stood the test of time more than commendably.

As for putting it on the track I guess the best thing you can do is chasis mods to get a good handling car even better. Refresh the bushes (if not already done), possibly some adjustable coilovers and uprated disks and pads :)

Out of curiosity what were the other contenders or was it a case of you knew you wanted an MX5 and nowt else was gonna do? I only say because the Mk3 MR2 is overlooked by a lot of people but from what I've seen they are just as capable as each other and I've even started seeing S2000's dip into the £4k range  (yes I know these aren't gonna be immaculate examples!)

Mx5s are girls cars, simple.

And then I drove my mates Mazdaspeed one, we even did an autotest in it down in Southampton. Terrific little car and lots of fun.

I wouldn't run one as a daily, but if the gf got one I'd be pinching it all the time :)

Fair enough but I really like the symmetry/look of the older and newer models with the hardtop on. To me it looks a bit like a mini Dodge Viper with the hardtop, especially the newer models.

Liking the 5!

Take a look at http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/ for interior / exterior bits and bobs, I'd suggest changing the reflectors and side indicators to clear ones, improves the look of the car quite well.

If you're looking for a new exhaust, I've got the dual exit Larini exhaust (rear section) and it sounds fantastic on my mk2, grumbles in the low revs and roars nicely in the high revs. The mx5 parts stainless exhaust sounds good also, do a search on youtube and you should find some good comparisons!

Get that roof down at every opportunity!

It's just a modernising and trim level exercise rather than a mechanical one. Things like the heated seats and deadlocking. I think the 6 speed box is unique to the 2.5 though, and I think the LSD is different to adjust for this. They might also have bigger brakes but I'm not sure on that one. Apart from this, not much I don't think

UK MK2's don't have the option for 6spd boxes or Variable Valve Timing but you can get JDM Mk2's (like mine, S-Special and RS-Special) with them. The Sport models come with larger 270mm front brakes and 276mm rears. Other changes are Front bumper, headlights, center console, seats are slightly higher and door cards are fatter.

This is totally true. And Mythbusters even proved that if you're driving with the roof down and it starts to rain, you stay dryer if you just keep going than you would if you took the time to stop and put it up!

the trick is to keep going untill you stop in traffic - wind the windows down slightly and you can then reach back with your right arm over your sholder and pull the hood up half way - grab the leading (top of windscreen) bar with your left hand and close the roof. Latch it in - takes all of 30seconds most and your away :)

If you want to get really fancy you can do it while moving less than 20mph, and even use the momentum when breaking to help pull the hood over, but i wouldn't recomend it :D

edit: and now the mk3 looks like its being SC'd reliably I might be re-joining the fold once the weddings out the way - damn money sink ;)
