Description and overview
A 3 pin cable for extending the reach of your existing fan cables. The Item reviewed is 30cm long and finished in orange braid. The cable forms part of the Alchemy range of fan cables which itself is only a small part of the extensive range of pre modded cables available from Bitfenix. I got this cable from (removed by G-Dubs in respect of forum rules) who as far as I can work out stock pretty much the entire range of Bitfenix cables. And that's a lot of cables.
First impressions and quality.
The simple "plastic bag with a folded card top" style packaging gives us a clear view of the product inside. If anything the packaging is a little understated as it in no way communicates the sheer quality of the cable If packaging could be designed that played a little trumpet "fanfare" when you opened it then this cable should be put into it. But this is just a simple fan cable how could that be fair (fan fair...geddit??? but that took me ages to think up...Oh never mind).
On a serious note, in my years of modding I have never been particularly impressed with the quality of pre modded cables. Also, if I'm honest, I've got a bit of a fetish for braiding my own. I find it quite therapeutic in an OCD kind of way. This cable is making me have a bit of a re think. The quality of not only the braiding, but the braid itself here has to be seen to be fully appreciated. It isn't cheapo shiny plastic looking braiding that's less flexible than the wires it's covering. Oh no, far from it, this is high quality fabric type braiding. The sort you find on expensive mice and peripherals.
Each of the 3 wires is individually braided, with a quality job made of the black heatshrinking. In keeping with the orange/Black theme, the plug terminations at either end are also black. It's nice, very very nice indeed.
Let me put it another way, I'm about to undertake a major project, a project that will invariably involve a substantial amount of cabling, and as much as I love sitting down for a really good braiding session, this cable from Bitfenix is making me have a serious re think about my approach. Don't believe it can be that good? Buy one and have a look. you won't be disappointed.
So if you are in the market for a pre braided fan extension cable then you'll be pleased to know they come in 30cm, 60cm, and 90cm lengths and are available in red, silver, green orange, blue and of course black.
The individually braided wires and colour selections are themes carried through the entire alchemy cable range. I got my cable from (removed by G-Dubs In respect of Forum rules) who stock pretty much the entire range, as well as many other useful pieces of kit.
Instructions.
Instructions are not included with this cable, and lets be honest they're not really necessary. If you managed to work out that you need an extension cable, in the process of doing so you've probably worked out for yourself where things plug in etc.
Fitting.
Very simple. Plug one end into the plug on your fan, and the other into the socket on either your Mobo or fan controller. The cable is very flexible and can be easily routed round corners.
Performance.
Like a lot of kit these days this cable hasn't just got the one job to do, namely that of conducting electricity. No, it has to conduct electricity and make it look good at the same. You can almost hear the cable saying "Any cable can conduct electricity, the difference is I make this **** Look goooood" (Internet cookie for anyone who can say where the root of that quote came from).
Conclusion.
A very High quality cable from Bitfenix forming part of a colour coordinated range of cables.
Good points.
Very high Quality
Price
Looks very good in the case
Large range of colours and lengths
Part of extensive coordinated range
Bad points.
Doesn't actually play a fanfare when you open the packet (if you've skipped to this point you might want to go back and read through)
Seriously though, I can't find fault with this product.
How could the product be improved?
Not sure it could really.
Would I want to spend more to make it better?
Nope.
