I bought a 4.8ghz overclocked bundle from your blue competitor and ran a stress test

It’s hitting 90 degrees on prime95, using a megashadow cooler on an Asus p8p67 pro board and an i7 2600k CPU (with akasa apaches in push pull)

I rang them and asked if this was OK, and they said it was fine as the processor wouldn’t be hammered that hard under usual circumstances

However, I do a lot of video encoding and also a bit of folding, so the CPU does get maxed out a lot and I’m concerned that this is simply too hot

The CPU VCORE is set up at 1.40 volts, which seems (unnecessarily) hot to me

It seems to me that not much time was spent testing the system and they have simply put generic OC settings on with an overly high Vcore. I thought I was paying more for the “best” settings

Should I consider sending it back and buying a bundle from OCUK instead?

I take it this is a sandy bridge chip? 1.4V at 90 degrees isn't great, but for 4.8ghz it's probably about right. I'm not convinced that running these chips at 4.8ghz is a long term plan though.

However, were I to contact a company with a similar concern and be told that their system could not be relied upon for stability under heavy use, I'd ask them what the **** they thought I was doing buying a 4.8ghz hyperthreaded quad core if I didn't want to do any processing with it.

So, while their settings sound like a minimum effort approach, it's the aftersales support of "well, yeah it'll die if you push it hard, what did you expect?" which is entirely unacceptable.

I totally agree Jon, (yes SB)..

OP: Do you know what they are like with their warranty returns etc? How much of a problem would have a should a problem occur etc?

Well the 3XS support told me it was under warranty for a year, so if it fails it’s covered. However, I really don’t want it playing on my mind all the time and wondering if leaving it on folding over night is going to break it!

I’m going to seriously consider returning it I think. Would be interesting to get some opinions from the OCUK build team

The article I linked basically gives their opinion on VCORE

Somewhatdamaged: Have they given you any other warranty? Just that a one year warranty on those volts may be a problem. It might not be but just taking the cautious approach.

What did you use to measure temps?

Well obviously the prime and IBT results are maximums and not real world. Have you temp checked when you are doing your usual workload? If the temps are more reasonable then maybe there is hope.

I suppose at the end of the day if you are not sure about/ not happy with your purchase then you should return or at least look into it.

hitting 85 degrees using Folding@home (just checked as i left my PC on)

Bit worrying, especially as it's winter at the moment!

It idles at 48 degrees, in a Corsair 600T, very clean build as well!

Idle at 48  My 2500k idles at 27-30c and peaks at 62c. 4.5ghz @ 1.31v.

For cooling i have the Megashadow with dual Akasa Vipers, an Akasa viper as an exhaust fan, and the standard 200mm corsair fans on front and top

!! Just started Prime95 and hitting 93 degrees on all cores (and rising!)

Took a 580 out , core 1 hitting 79 degrees, all others hitting 93

I reseated the heatsink last night as well, put on some MX3 compound (I’ve done this many times before!) and it dropped temps a few degrees from the stock paste they must have used
