Creepy... "top secret america"

Just because they have clearance doesn't mean they get access to the good stuff.

You need a certian level of clearance to work for different sectors, it's the same over here if you work for the likes of BAE etc.

There's a difference between secret clearance and top secret clearance. Most DOD/military people have the basic clearance.

For top secret clearance they travel around the country interviewing your friends, family, old school teachers, old work colleagues. Sometimes a polygraph test. It's very thorough.

I have "SC" security clearance in the UK. Official Secrets Act and all that. Must inform the Home Office if I intend to travel to a number of countries.

I can't go somewhere, flash a badge, and look at stuff.

It'll be just like it is over here - IT staff supporting systems which hold sensitive information etc.

I have secret clearence in the RAF to be able to install IFF codes and radar warning reciever programs etc.. There are lots of different classifications of secret depending on what you apply it too. You may have secret clearence but it will only apply to what you need to carry out your job.

I'd think the largest number of certain level of clearance would come with defence contractors.

It probably takes a few thousand people making different parts to build a stealth bomber, and you'd think they'd be signed up to a low level of clearance to be able to work in the factories and see the plans etc. I guess half of giving someone a certain level of clearance is so you can run a proper background check and also, essentially sign someone up to a contract agreeing to never divulge any of the info they see.

Now think about how many people work on everything the military produces, ships, planes, missiles, guns and everything else. How many military bases they work on, or how many factories/manufacturing plants with heavy heavy security they work in.

Even the cleaner can hold certain clearences, If they sweep near anything classified they have to be cleared. Having secret or any security clearence does not mean you can play with all the good stuff and check out all the underground bases with the missiles like the movies... :D

the us government can listen in on all your phone conversations whenever they like without a warrant.

And it's clearance you find creepy?

They could also launch 500 nukes at the top 500 largest population centres whenever they want and its telephone spying you find creepy?
