I have been putting off getting a new PC as there hasnt been many games which have got me excited.

This year though there is a lot of games i want to be able to play at max/High settings. One game especially i would like to play at max will be Shogun 2 :D

Old system is a C2D E6600, 4 gig OCZ plat ddr 2 ram and a 8800GTX (Which has served me well)

I will be taking my PSU , TX 850w Corsair (not modular :( but still more than enough?) and my Samsung F3 1TB which has W7 on it.

I have a Antec 900 case but there is no cable management at all and it is very tight with my non mod PSU. Below is what i have come up with.

build1-1.jpg

I would like to stick with nvidia for Graphics card as may use there 3D feature in the future. I put the 580 down as at moment thats there best card. Are there new cards due before March?

Budget is £1k give or take.

mm you say windows is on your hdd, do you have the retail dvd because you will need to reinstall after you fit to a new motherboard etc.

Ahhh i forgot about this thank you. I have a promotional copy of Windows 7 ultimate on disk. Had it for £10 through a special offer as i work in retail.

It doesnt say OEM on the disk and i have key etc.

So i will have to do a full clean install then? Guess i better make sure all my stuff is backed up

The word overkill comes to mind when you mainly want this rig for Shogun 2. But for the future games it's good.

However, I do agree with 95thrifles: get the 570 and save yourself about 100 quid and buy a better CPU cooler (especially if you're overclocking that i5 which v. good choice for Shogun)

Yeah its for a lot of upcoming games like battlefield 3, crysis 2 etc, I put the 580 down as thats the best nvidia have at the moment.

What cooler is the best bang for buck these days then?

Also are there any new GPU's due out before march to consider?

Hm, maybe get a mid-range card for now and wait till the end of the year to buy a high end one (nVidia is bound to bring out cards by then! :p)

And although this is very biased, I can't praise the Noctua ND-H14 enough. And I'm pretty sure it will fit in your case (my brother wants the HAF as well and I am going to put in the Noctua when I build his rig).

Looks like a good system, and if you want to play other games as wel, like those you mention, I suppose there is nothing wrong with a 580. It might be worth having a look at the 570's though, or find some reviews to see if you feel the performance gain is worth the extra money.

There probably will be a few new GPU's out, but none that will beat the 580, at least not to my knowledge, unless Nvidia bring out their dual GPU card, but I havent herd much on that, so im sure you'll be fine with a 580 if tht is what you want.

I too am looking forward to Shogun 2, looks like it should be a great game :)

Not sure about this mate, I went from a p2 550 to an i7 860 without reinstalling win7. Just booted up, loaded a couple of drivers, and jobs a goodun :)

In fact the only time Ive had to reinstall win7 since I got it is when I got my c300, and for some reason couldn't get my old c drive to clone properly

I really like the look of the Titan Fenrir Evo. Seems its also quite large from the reviews so hope it fits in the Haf X.

Im not sure if the Haf X is overkill or not. I will have one GPU, one Hard drive and one DVD drive. I may add a ssd at end of year. So hard picking a case. HAF X meets all my needs but am thinking could save a lot of money on a good mid tower.

Think about the upgrades though. I bet you'll add at least two more HDs before you're through with that case.

And you'll probably look to SLI in the future.

I have never used SLI and never will. I prefer a single powerful graphics with less hassle.

Im actuall thinking if im not going to SLI should i get the MSI which doesnt come with SLI and save £30?

Thats the only difference bewteen the boards as far as i can see?

in the old days of rome etc it was a cpu game but its shifted towards GPU recently with napoleon so i guess shogun will work the same way.im actually building my rig for shogun as one of my top 3 games of 2011.

im going from the same rig btw! E6300 instead of e6600 and i ordered the same GFX card 2 days ago and plan on the same cpu.

anyways choices seem solid apart from a few things that dont make sense.your rig is not uber high end so ditch the £139 case for the cheaper HAF 912 plus which will hit £90 when you buy additional fans.excellent case for your needs as i have one.you need a side dust filter here so thats the only reason you might need the bigger case as its fully filtered but you still only get 2 stock 200mm fans out of the 4 it can take so its going to work out at £150 minimum.

you should take the 2500k bundle from OCUK as well which will be pre overclocked and have cooler and ram.you do not need 8GB for gaming and this will result in a better p8p67 pro motherboard and akasa venom cpu cooler.this is what i have chosen so your rig will be identical to mine apart from me taking the £19 dvd-rw.

ps i dont think a 580 is overkill if you are not willing to go SLI.shogun is a nvidia optimized game so 570 minimum for max settings i think.

Interesting feedback thank you. I will look into what you have suggested.
As far as RAM goes i think 8GB is cheap enough these days its worth it for future proof.

I def hear what your saying about the case. I wasnt 100% sure on it as ive mentioned above. Il look into the case you mentioned.

MSI motherboards i believe have a overclock feature which can overclock your system to 4ghz at touch of a button. If i save money by not paying for a overclock i may stick with this motherboard.

i had second thoughts on the haf x there i do admit but its only because of the dust filtering on the top and front which i thought was superior to the little brother 912 plus.the haf x still is missing a bottom psu filter so thats £15 more for custom cut demcflex , 2x 200mm fans £30 , rubber case feet £10 rear 140mm £9 etc.

i think when i done the maths the haf x came to about £70 more kitted out with the same quality of filters installed but better cooling.the fact i never get full resale value locally or people who appreciated a dust filtered case means i will keep the 912 plus and that £70.

thats my experience to be honest and on your budget £70 is a lot! and the overclocked bundle is about £20 more expensive than the seperates so its great value, that 1 button overclock is 4GHZ but the bundle gets you 4.4 and maybe it will go back to 4.6 in a few weeks.its hassle free and the money you save by taking 4GB of ram covers this upgrade.i know 8GB is cheap but u will get better fps taking low latency c6 1600mhz in a 4GB kit over 8GB and save £40? i want 8GB too dont get me wrong but compared to putting the money into a 4.4GHZ bundle then its a no brainer, one gives fps gains the other doesnt!

they used stock cooling which is 1x200mm 1x 120mm which is pants imo so dont judge the graphs.

it will be a beast at max settings, have you seen that nighttime battle with the roaming fog? shadows+fog will make most cards cry i think.im confident my 580 will net me a good 40fps minimum on max settings.

Can you tell me what fans/filters OC provides i should pick up with the 912? I have watched a video review on it and it seems good enough for me. I will check out the overclocked bundles. Cheers.
