Is 40" too big to be used as monitor?

Basically my old five year old dell has broken, classic green light blinking and capicitator screaching.The cost of a soldering Iron and the fire risk is not worth repairing.
I am broke at the moment and the only monitor that I could really use is 40" Tv,Because I am lazy and have not tried moving the tv, do you think I could get away with using it as a monitor?Yes it is hdmi and 1080p but the problem might be that it ends up just being unbearable to use. I will be sitting about 1m away

I'd say yes, it's pretty hard on the eyes. especially from 1m away!

I've used my 50" plasma on occaison (to play L4D!) and that's fine but you need to be 6-8ft away.

To use it for Windows and apps even at that range will be hard going.

I am actually using my htpc right now on a 46" from about 1m away. It might be alright if I put the brightness down, that said it seems quite hard to read stuff inless you zoom in quite a bit.

My mate uses a 32" from close up and I reckon it's impractically large.

Looking bad, I might have to go for a diy job.
