My OCZ Vertex 2 SSD just died on me after 7 weeks light use!

Drive not recognised.

Not impressed with OCZ's RMA process either. It's taken 4 days to get an RMA authorised and I have to pay to send the drive to Holland.

Hope the next one doesnt die on me too!

where did you get it from?

Mine vertex died on me before xmas ....gave it back on warranty to shop I bought it from...
Still with them :( will call them up tomorrow to see whats taking them so long...

After it died, I went to see OCZ forums. was not impressed with amount of threads saying their SSD died...

I will never get another OCZ disk lol

my vertex LE died begining of december so i sent it back to ocuk, got an email from ocuk on 15th december saying it was being sent back to OCZ for repair/replacement. id not heard a word by the begining of last week so i phoned ocuk.. they said they'd had an email back from OCZ saying they wer gonna replace it with a vertex 2E and they would have it by the 15th jan, was hoping to hear today that theyd posted it to me but not heard anything.. il phone em tomorrow. but its taken over a month so far from when ocuk posted it off to them :(

Looks like OCZ RMA service is not really upto the standards I would expect. Being without a HD for a month is not really acceptable.

Anyone know of any SSD manfacturers with a better RMA service?

Thats a dreadfully long time to be waiting.

Hmmm hearing problems with SSD's like this always make me wary of upgrading to one.

As it was under a year and you should really make the retailer deal with it. But that being said, does sound like a bad experience which you shouldn't be having. Try moaning on the their forums.

Problem with support forums is you only really see the bad stuff, people rarely visit when everything is working. It comparison to HDDs the current data does shows that SSDs are considerably more reliable in the short term, but it is early days for any blanket statements about long term reliability.

guys, do you know how many days retailer has to get this kind of problem sorted? it is 30days now since I left my SSD with the retailer....
is it 28 working days or 28 days ??

I think it might be 28 working days, but give Consumer Direct a call and I expect they will inform you.

Have you tried chasing the retailer up via phone, e-mail, forums etc?

At this stage in my mind the #1 benefit is performance. To put it bluntly everything electronic fails eventually and removing the mechanical element from storage is obviously the way forward to improve reliablity. It is however still an emerging technology with bugs to work out.

Just like monitors and HDD they could be made virtually problem free, but it would make each unit extremely expensive which is why we have to put up with dead pixels and bad sectors.

For the benefit of future searches. I've bought 13 OCZ Vertex2e 60GB. No, it wasn't the 13th one that bricked, but it was bought on a Friday in Sept 2010. ;) It saw light use in a new Core i5 laptop. Also, the user mentioned missing emails, so may have had that problem where new data is lost from the SSD after being powered off before it finally bricked. Got directed to the OCZ RMA process too.

Reading this concerns me as I was thinking of getting a Vertex 2E soon. Not much use having a 3 year warranty if it's so difficult to RMA the thing should something go wrong. Looks like I might end up going for a Crucial C300..

Both are excellent drives, I own both models, the 2E has more well rounded performance but you won't notice this outside of benchmarks. For me the support at OCZs forums is better, but Crucial do have an excellent RMA system. Either way for the first year you go through the retailer, so bare that in mind.

The RMA is easy , go to ocz website support page raise a ticket , wait for the people in state's to wake up (2-days) get RMA number , DHL the drive to holland , they check drive is locked in panic state or broken , they fed-ex a new drive next day from thailand , took under 10 days from raising ticket.

One of easiest RMA's processes I've dealt with tbh - quick and the support people were not rude and very helpful , but yes postage to holland sucks :(

Oh and I've done this twice now...

its a blue screen / sand force controller issue for me.

So I'm going to sell my RMA, My other ocz indilinx based ssd has been fine for 1 1/2 years not a hiccup - Personally I'm avoiding sandforce for my next drive

my Vertex LE RMA was done through overclockers as it was under 12 months old and so OCZ didnt even have to post a new SSD to me, they simply credited OCuK's account and gave them the go ahead to give me a replacement..

so why did this take over a month?

after reading other comments and with a little bit of hindsight i should have gone direct to OCZ, overclockers let me down on this one.
