Essentially i'm just brainstorming here, so feel free to ignore/be stupid.

Well after not buying much of any significant value for a few years i've saved up around £300, and now i can't decide what to spend it on. Come up with a few options but i'm open to suggestions:

1 - Get some computer upgrades

Pros:
  • Rely quite a lot on my computer, and a stock E2140, 2GB DDR2 and an x1950 Pro is starting to show it's age.
Cons:
  • Already have something that works, is fine for browsing and playing music which is 90% of what i use it for anyway.

2 - Get a used DSLR & Lens

Pros:
  • Lost count of how many times i've thought 'I wish i had a camera.
  • Allows for more creative things.
  • Potential to get a little return on it.
  • Besides my phone camera i don't already have something for this purpose.
Cons:
  • Can't think of any...

3 - Woodworking and Luther tools and materials

Pros:
  • Something i'm very interested in.
  • Pretty much sorts my dad's 50th and my brother's 21st birthday presents out.
  • Can pay for itself eventually.
Cons:
  • Never actually getting the time to get round to it.
  • There always being something else to buy.

4 - Astronomy Kit

Pros:
  • Sends a shiver down my spine even to think about what's out there.
  • Links with philosophy, which i am also extremely interested in.
Cons:
  • Living in an urban area.
  • Not very multi-purpose.
  • Not sure what you can get for that sort of budget.

What will you be using most and what do you think you will enjoy using the most?

We are all here going to say upgrade your PC! Of course! :)

Buy an Ayn Rand book! It'll expand your political mind!

Edit : Sorry, a mod has said I have to tell you to upgrade your PC.

How about an SSD?

Ha, i have a WD360 and my OS runs mainly in RAM, thanks but i'll pass.

And not that i've got plenty of reading to do anyhow, but what's their work like? I've got my library ticket around here somewhere :p

Oh God no, please don't do this. No offence The Halk, but her books were often turgid, needlessly over-complicated nonsense read by Political or English undergrads who want to be far cooler than they really are. Her objectivism stance is philosophically empty and makes for very boring and uninspiring reading.

Then again, given the OP's sig quote, this kind of tripe might be right up his street :)

The OPs political views are pretty much opposed to hers, that's why I recommend it. It's good to read someone who completely disagrees.

Get a flight to spain, live in hostels for free by doing cleaning for the owners and spend the rest on sangria and cocaine.

Stop recommending people to read Ayn Rand!

First off, you must look like this :

Secondly, you must be a student.

Thirdly, it's essential that your desire to belong to a scene or in-crowd is of more importance than taking in anything that her books may be able to offer you (hint : they can't offer you anything).

Lastly and most importantly, you have to use the phrases, "Well in The Fountainhead, Rand uses the ideas of ..." and "Whilst Atlas Shrugged was never a perfect novel, Rand does raise many points which I ..." whenever you can. Even if it's not relevent. Actually, especially if it's not relevant.

Because you are now, like thousands of hipsters, students and other ne'er do wells before you, in the smuggest of smug cliques : the "I've read an Ayn Rand book" club. Congratulations.

Magnolia your post is funny :)

People do the same with Karl Marx too though. You don't need to hipster it up though if you read them!
