Hey guys
I need some advice buying a bmw 5 series with miles that are over 100k, what are the implications of this? More chance of going wrong?
Because its a diesel am i right in thinking to half the miles so essentially it would be a 50-60k car?

My budget is around 13k and the musts are 525/530D Msport with a auto box, as fully loaded as possible...

Ive seen this on trader, only downside i can see are the wheels, although they look nice i would prefer a standard set.

My main concern is that most of the cars within my budget are well over 100k but with FBMWSH, so should i be concerned?

Thanks.

Dont buy an E60 without a warranty, therefore dont buy one with 100k miles on it. The miles are not the problem, they'll go wrong at any mileage, but you wont get a warranty at 100k or a half decent one at much over 60k.

There are so many things to go wrong on these cars that buying a diesel without warranty is just pointless, as the fuel savings get eaten by the repair bills.

I went on a similar journey to you around 10 months ago. In the end, I determined that the spec of car I wanted (included HUD and LCI) was simply not available in my budget.

So I revised my search and looked at cars which actually met both my requirements and also my budget, allowing me to have a pool from which I could check and ultimately buy from.

I originally wanted the E60 525 petrol, but ended up with the E90 325 petrol. I can't offer any opinion on the former, other than I still want one, preferably in 530 guide. The E90 325 is decent quality albeit bland for my own personal opinion. I did however realise I needed the doors more than the space, so the 3 series was the right choice.

My parents have an E60 525i LCI petrol which has pretty much exactly summed up my thoughts on the matter and dumped a 4 figure bill despite being only 3.5 years old and having sensible mileage.

I honestly think the days of buying a bargain high mileage BMW are over. It's a shame really because condition wise the high milers are just as good, if not better. The problem is that nobody will cover them warranty wise.

I think the E39/E46/Z4 were the last you could do this with effectively. Now, everything needs coding and nothing seems that cheap to sort. Especially on the diesels.

Not sure about which E model it was but I saw a beautiful 530i SE estate today with just over 100k on a 51 (I think) for a fiver less than 3k. If my girlfriend had been driving longer the Sedici would have been sold to Fiat and I would be driving that.

What model would that have been Fox. It was an Auto (which I need now) and had beautiful cream leather interior with walnut cappings.

Try an find it on auto trader now.

Those days probably are over. The warranty cost / lack of availability is because they're just as liable to failure as most other makes, and when they do, they're normally more expensive.

However, larger sample sizes and the market prices in general suggest that they're still a little more reliable and desirable than the norm. I'll probably think differently tomorrow when it is back from the MOT!

That would have been an E39, the same as Fox has but he's got a sport not an SE.

Yeah take it is a wreck? Was less than the price in the windscreen as well. Maybe trader rip off? My impulse buys were never my strong point. Glad I had no cash!

I doubt its a wreck as such, usually, one owner cars are the sort to pick out of possible.

Obviously, you'd still buy on condition though..... :)
