Why is this taking so long?

two seperate programs, doing the same thing. Am I missing something major?

Surely it can't be a faulty drive, can it?

I can't see the drive being faulty as it is doing its job, albeit chronically slowly.. it maybe worth exchanging the drive purely for eliminating it as an issue, but it does sound like a software issue, or maybe bad firmware on the drive. Maybe exchange it for a different make at a similar price.

But humor me, how long have you let it run for? Let it run a few hours whilst you have dinner and watch telly.

Then you can tell me I was wrong and I will feel daft.

Is it a faulty disk? does it play normally?

The first few blurays i tried to play with my drive required firmware and software updates to power dvd before it played ball.

Theres no problem with make mkv, as long as theres nothing else accessing the drive.

Update Time:

Thank's to all those who offered help. The problem appeared to be the disc in the end. Regardless of it being a brand new Blu_Ray out the wrapper, it just didn't want to rip.

I loaded up a new dvd and it ripped in just over 30 minutes. Very strange.

Thank's to all those who offered help, Very much appreciated :)

HOWEVER!!!

I am now having problems converting in Handbrake. I know i'm an absolute pain in the a..e! Software really isn't my thing :( Give me a dead pc to diagnose any day of the week.

Anyway, I downloaded the latest version, tried doing a rip with the basic settings and my video came out like this.

I then tried to install klite codec pack full, with the update. That had no effect what so ever. Tell a lie it allowed me to view it in WMP, however it was around 4FPS.

Is this an encode problem or a codec problem? I haven't played with video encoding since .avi's

Any help once again is really appreciated.

...Edited for talking ballcocks... I've now downloaded MakeMKV and it ran through a DVD in under 10 mins. Proc usage was minimal indicating that your read speed is pants.

Re. the Handbrake issue - it could be any of a myriad of issues. Which preset are you using? What filetype? Handbrake has a useful forum of it's own (https://forum.handbrake.fr/), the folks on there would probably full of useful info.

I never actually read your original post. What did you say I am intrigued?

I realise they have a forum, however I am pretty loyal to this one, and have found a wealth of knowledgeable people on here.

I selected, all sorts of presets, and settings. I used the preview button and none would play back properly.

I did download an older version of handbrake to try that. It created an .mkv for me, however there was no audio, and it was only around 600MB. Useless.

I haven't had issues like you describe with handbrake, however, it is not the easiest program to use you do need to go through all the settings, ensure an audio track is selected etc.

I'm glad you got the ripping issue sorted m8, haven't the foggiest about makemkv or handbrake though, last time i did some bluray transcoding "ripbotx264" was the app of choice.
