Bought a 2001 Mazda 626 gxi 1.8 yesterday

Hey all, I finally got myself back on the road after the accident I experienced on Xmas Eve:

Well, money is tight at the mo and I was sick of getting buses/trains into work so I bought a Mazda 626. Got the price down to 800 from 950 and I know a few people might turn their noses up but hey, it's a car and I'm on the road

Anyone, didn't notice this yesterday when I picked the car up, but when driving back from work tonight, I heard like a squealing sound which my dad said is probably the fan belt (I think he said that). Does anyone agree? If it is, how much should I expect to pay to get it fixed?

Get some pics up of it

And the squealing probably is fan belt, if it was just for a couple of seconds I wouldn't worry about it too much, especially if your short of money

I absolutely love the car mate and I think it was well worth the money. I'll get pics up tomorrow after I wash it etc. :-)

Looking forward to washing my car, does that make me sad? lol.

Not even remotely sad, maybe sad(ish)

would anyone have a rough idea of how much it would cost to fix the fan belt? Will need to get it sorted next month.

It's a pretty cheap job, on most cars, 15mins to half an hour labour, the actual belt will be cheap.

It probably just needs tightening, no idea on price though

Maybe so... even if you do end up replacing the belt, its a very basic job. If you know someone who's handy with cars then just get them to do it, and buy them a drink.. in reality its probably a 5 min job, but a garage won't charge you for 5 mins of labour, they probably will have a minimum charge... get some quotes so you get an idea of what it will cost..

grab a spanner and do it yourself!

We had a '92 626 1.8 GLXi as the family hack for years, it was utterly reliable. Rust got it in the end.

I had a 2002 626 GLXi and I wish I never got rid of it. Was a bit underpowered as it only had 115bhp on a 2.0 litre Auto. The car was superb and reliable, unfortunately it was fitted with the horrible Ford CD4E auto box which had a reliable reputation of destroying itself between 60k-80k miles. Put me off the car totally as it came into the mid-50k's to a point that I became paranoid and p/ex it.

To this day wish I hadn't.

The aux belt's been squealing on my Volvo for months. I'm going to wait until something fails before fixing it.

Fair comment, but realise you will be stigmatised as the car equivalent of the "annoying guy on the train who refuses to buy decent headphones" and broadcasts his pop-metal or pseudo rap to a bunch of people who really don't want to hear it. Especially at 6am.
If you can afford good tyres, you can afford a fan belt

I'm shocked that a few people here have said that they enjoyed they're Mazda 626's as I usually make the wrong decision when buying things lol.

It's very, very faint and only when it's cold.

I'm sure I'll be able to manage without A/C and power steering.
