Hi there Guys,

I have running at the moment:

I7 920 (Not overclocked)
12gb xms3 ddr3 rAM
Asus P6T SE Board
ATI 4890 Graphics card

Is it worth me upgrading to a new Sandy Bridge I7 Processor or can someone give me a clue on what I7 Sandy bridge Chips will better than mine - or if I should just upgrade some of the other components. I have no idea what graphics card to get and I'm not sure to go cross fire or what.

I do play games, though not much on the PC, I have Resident Evil 5 and thats it lol! Runs great so far with no issues. I am doing my web managment degree and are using Adobe CE5 a lot so I need the ram. Any opinions if I should upgrade???

Nah i wouldnt bother, the proper replacements for socket 1366 i7's are still a while away(socket 2011 i think it is), the socket 1155 sandy bridge cpus that are being released soon will likely outperform what you have but not by enough to warrent an upgrade, itll be more of a sidegrade. You should wait for the 6-8 core stuff on socket 2011.

Your setup is perfect for what you need it for. Absolutely no need to upgrade for a long while.

If you want some extra performance overclock that processor :)

Lol got a q6600 at 3.2 and have been asking myself the same question, use the pc for games most of the time think ill save the money for beer instead.

GPU would be biggest upgrade for you system.

Gaming wise any way.

I would be looking at a GTX 570 or a 6970 (I can already hear people saying 6950 and bios mod it to 6970 performance)

If you ever feel your CPU is holding you back, get a decent cooler and overclock it. It'll be more cost effective than upgrading for a long while.

With that amount of RAM you have a very future proof system. And when you feel you need more power you should easily be able to add 1Ghz unto your CPU, which will make a fair difference.

Ive just gone from a i7 930 clocked to 3.8 to a sandy bridge 2600k and can tell you sandy bridge is faster and cooler and do see a difference in some games.

I wanted my old i7 for another build so getting sandy bridge was worth it to me.

I could have bought a 980 i guess but with sandy bridge i get same kind of performance and even though i bought new mobo and ram its still a few hundred cheaper than a 980 and my old kit goes into a new build.

Your current system is a massive overkill IMO. Do you really need 12gb of RAM? Like does it actually fill up 6gb?

The only way to decide if your current CPU is fast enough is to watch task manager. Does it regularly go to 100% load for long periods? If so, I'd considor overclocking, then if that isn't fast enough still, considor going SB.

no, your just feeling the upgrade itch after looking at benchmarks maybe?

Overclock your processor you will probably become a lot happier and wait for another year or two depending on the tech that comes out

Christ, not surprised they introduced tuition fees! Some have more money than sense. (And that's not implying that you are even stupid, just have more money than you have knowledge on the subject)

I don't even have to know the details but it ain't worth upgrading within a generation that requires a mobo change, especially when your CPU is fast enough for everything you do. Unless bragging about synthetic numbers is your bag.

P.S Adobe CE5? you mean the Creative studio perhaps? I find it hard to believe 12GB of ram is necessary. Also you were like "I have no idea what graphics card to get and I'm not sure to go cross fire or what" if you are not sure what gfx to get and consider crossfire an 'or what choice' as if your already done with a fairly fast card. Then I really am envious of your pocket.

No . Find a girlfriend :D... She will find a better way to spend that student loan and grant... then updating that i7 you have to SB... Joking apart, only thing on your PC specs that could be worth updating is the graphics card to something newer and you say your i7 920 is not overclocked... So if you don't have a good CPU cooler maybe invest in one and overclock that CPU and some better case cooling if needed.

Nope :)

As mentioned by several others... perhaps a GPU upgrade... but again the 4890 probably copes well with Adobe CE5 anyway. Hard to resist when idiots are throwing 5870's and 5970's away for next to half what they paid for them 12 months or less ago!!!
