GTX460 on P5N-E

I recently purchased a Palit GTX460 sonic (1gb) to upgrade my 8800gts.

I have a E6750 on P5N-E which i understand is compatible, 4gb ram (3.5gb recognised as on vista 32).

My PSU is a bit crappy, an Evo Lab 750W, but it claims 42A on 12V.

When i installed the GPU i got a blank screen (no signal on monitor), heard fan run on GPU and heard windows load (well first time at least)

However tried again and i think it is generally failing to boot at all. I get some funny noises from DVD RW (like it can't read the disk, although no disk in there) and usually 3 beeps from the mobo.

It sounded like a PSU prob (my existing 1 only has one PCI-e 6pin, though comes with a conveter, so thought that would be fine) so i have ordered a XFX pro 750 from OcUK

Just wondered if any1 could confirm if this indeed sounds like the prob or maybe something else? i have heard about perhaps updating bios on mobo, but i am new to all this stuff so not 100% sure how to go about this.

Also realise i may have a bit of bottle neck with CPU, but i may look at upgrading that with mobo next, just would like to see how this new GPU helped first. ;)

As i say, new to all this so hopefully have got the info correct etc.

No output to the screen sounds like the card isn't receiving enough power. I assume you have both the PCI-e from the PSU and the 2 x molex to 6 pin connectors plugged into the card?

Just to let you know I got the same thing when I plugged a GTX460 into my server but forgot to plug in the PCI-e connectors (card fan spins up but no output).

Additionally your motherboards manual should detail what 3 beeps means (normally no GPU signal or something like that) which would indicate the card isn't getting enough power.

Finally does your system still work with the 8800GTS?

Thx for response...

Ye when i put 8800GTS back in worked fine again.

And ye used 1 PCI-e 6pin and 2 x molex with converter for second slot. (I assumed it didn'tt matter which or where i connect to molex, they go off to fans/dvd etc and i even tried disconnecting dvd and fans so power was dedicated)

PSU coming tomorrow, just didn't want to unbox if i was miles off in theory, but i will also check out the beeps, thx.

Just found this:

AwardBIOS Beep Codes
1 short: System boots successfully
2 short: CMOS setting error
1 long 1 short: DRAM or M/B error
1 long 2 short: Monitor or display card error
1 long 3 short: Keyboard error
1 long 9 short: BIOS ROM error
Continuous long beeps: DRAM error
Continuous short beeps: Power error

Perhaps it was 1 long and 2 short i was hearing, so I assume the mobo could interpret this as GPU error if there is insufficient power to it?

Also any comment on if i am to have a significant bottle neck? have only tried auto OC in Bios of 10% as it seems unstable after that, but believe i may manually be able to get more?

750Watt PSU isn't giving the card enough juice??? why not?

Well ye, that is the question. But as i say it is a really cheapo PSU, i bought it in a rush when my old OCZ went and it was all my local shop had :(

This is it here:

http://www.envizage.com/products/po...abs-750w-atx-silent-pc-power-supply-unit.html

And hence the question, i didn't really want to install another PSU (£80ish for the XFXpro750) )to find the same prob...wondered if i had missed something?

PSU on order: http://www.kitguru.net/components/power-supplies/zardon/xfx-pro-series-750w-power-supply-review/

Because specifications on generic cheap crap PSU should be taken as a pinch of salt :D

A £20ish 750W PSU (just checked the "Evo Lab 750W" sorry excuse for a PSU)...you're lucky that it hasn't blown up and taken the rest of the components with it yet.

Seriously, get that PSU out of your PC ASAP! The new XFX PSU should solve the problem.

Thx, i suspected as much, and yes, embarrassed to admit that PSU found its way in :o

I will be sticking in the XFX asap tomorrow and will update.

Thx for the input all

Rule is never scrimp on PSU, that goes, bye bye the rest...

I would have orded a Corsair from OCUK and waited a day....1 day of no PC over a possible blow-up killing motherboard is not an option in my book. Leading to much longer wait etc...

Your 460 was a lucky coincidence, it shows you what the potential head ache that might have happened.

So...

I have installed the new PSU, it works perfectly with my existing 8800GTS card, but still exactly the same problem when i put the new 460GTX in.

So i then updated the mobo BIOS and after a little scare relating to the hard drive not being recognised (as defaulted to not RAID) i have everything back up and running with old card.

But still have problem when i try new card, i have realised the beep code is 1 long and 3 short beeps, which i have confirmed as GPU error in manual.

So now i am pulling my hair out, i am sure others have put a 460GTX on a P5N-e SLI, but for me it just seems to fail to recognise it.

I have checked all conns, and as i say have no issues when i put old card back in.

Last resort would be to get someone to check the card on another machine, but for that i would prob have to take to shop.

Anyone with any other ideas before i do?

Id say rma and tell them that it mught be something to do with the nvidia mobo compatibility. If no fault found return your mobo with it

I remember when my Hiper PSU went bang.

Since then I've only bought Tagan and OCZ which have been solid for years of use. Corsair and Antec are also great, but I've never used nor would recommend an XFX over those.

Still having problems :(

So i ordered a new card, tried that and exactly the same. Tried a third card and the same.

I have had my mobo out and isolated from the case and still the same.

I have tried any combination of 2 PCI-e 6 pin power conns (of the 4 i have on PSU) and even converting molex to see if that helps - still the same.

Is it possible that i need to reset CMOS with the new card in place? would this help/work?

I have pulled the cards in and out so much i am reluctant to keep trying, but any last ideas/suggestions would be much appreciated befr

I used to have that board, I think the VRM's are a bit flaky on it (they overheat), also it is an old motherboard (design), can only conclude that is the seat of your problem.

I presume (in saying above) that you tried a fresh install of windows and that your Bios is set to boot correctly etc etc.

I had a odd issue with my P5N-e SLi... but mine was when using a new ATI HD5770. Turns out the old BIOS that came as standard on the board was causing the motherboard to take 45 seconds to reach the POST screen and it appeared as if something more permanent was the problem. Latest BIOS and it sorted the issue out. Just wondered how long you have left it for before switching it off, just in case there is an issue like this?

Tried this new card in another PC to see if it works?

Thanks for all the comments guys but i think i am gonna have to give it up!

I have pretty much tried everything, (except the reinstall of windows actually), but most recently I reset CMOS again and have tried 3 different cards (all GTX460) with same result.

And btw i tend to switch it off after i get the 4 beeps as i consider that a fail :(

Anyway gonna prob bite the bullet and go for new mobo/cpu/mem etc. and be done with it.
