How far advance are Germans and Jap cars in 2011.

Afternoon all,

I was having a discussion today with some friends.

In todays market, how far advance do you think German and Japanese cars are in comparison to other competitors.

i.e. auris v focus v golf etc.


We have a 58 plate auris and in comparison to the old corolla, it just lacks power and doesn't seem as solid..

Do you guys think other manfacturers are creeping up with jap and german?

Probably a muddled post.

What I was trying to get at was, are german and japanese cars still the best cars to go for in terms of reliability, or are other manafacturers just as reliable and built as solid today..
 
the french italians and americans are still as bad as they ever were.

Apart from Ford, or Jaguar / Land Rover

dont really think anybody else is as good as the Germans / Japanese.

Don't agree, If we talk in terms of pure reliability like the OP wants, French and Italian cars have come on leaps and bounds in the past 5 years, wouldn't really class American cars as unreliable either big lazy engines with not that much to go wrong.

I don't think that's true... the bar has been raised for consumer expectation and all of the manufacturers are trying hard to reach that level. Most have made significant strides in the last 10 years in build quality and reliability.

Yeah Fiat have just released a 500 that has so low emissions it is now exempt from the congestion charge in London. Alfa Romeo's multi-air engine is pretty ancient too

But since then the MiTo has acquired a pair of new engines that are vitally important for Alfa, for FIAT, and perhaps, without exaggeration, for the World.

They are called MultiAir. And what this means is a new and completely different way of getting more air into an engine than was previously possible.

On top of that the 170PS MultiAir is a joyful engine. Responsive, yet tractable. 0-60 in 7.3 seconds and a top end of 136mph is pretty good for a 1.4 watercooled turbo.

Yeah I always remember 1.4 turbo engines producing 170bhp.

LOL, yeah we are talking stock out of the factory here. Lets be honest an 8 valve R5 turbo engine on a carb that had to have a cat, that had to meet EU emissions with 50.4mpg would probably be a major engineering feat today.
 
Ford are more reliable than VW
BMWs and Mercs are not that good at the moment
Jap cars are usually more reliable*

Agree with most of whats already been said. Imo Audi is the leader of the Germans, and Honda of the Japs, in reliability anyway. I base this on my experience as an MOT tester so i'm talking 3 year old cars here. Unless you bought a vauxhall i can't see any 2011 cars having had any problems yet.

How are you finding Jaguars? Is JD Power representative of what you see.
 
All car companies are in bed with one and another, ford engines are fine, its the bad body work which will litteraly start falling off the car once it's 10 years old, that you need to worry about.

Sporty focuses run Volvo lumps, some Volvo diesel blocks are mitzi's, and the puma 1700 is a yamaha design. I could go on but I'm sure you get the picture.

Capitalism plus mass production equals same sheep, different badge.

Ford designed the engine along with Yamaha. They are also dropping the |5 Lolvo engine in favour of a 2 litre 'ecoboost' engine in the forthcoming Focus ST.

You do also realise Ford owned Volvo at the point they used these engines as well?

As for the bodywork comment, that's one of those stupid misconceptions; like all German and Japanese cars are 100% reliable.

Just wanted to ask why do you think Toyota have lost the plot
Do you mean with all the hybrid stuff they are releasing etc?


My mum had a lemon with the 55 focus. She bought it Brand new with 0 miles, and did 14k over three years (which is nothing) she had the 1.6 petrol and had to go back to the main-dealer at least 10 times. (Engine warning light coming on) Coil packs, wiring looms, alternator, changed before 14k!
