Better fill those tanks -Fuel protests are coming back!

If the hauliers protest expect disruption, not cheaper prices at the pump whatever the outcome.

The hauliers want concessions for road haulage fuel and that is it. Even if by some miracle they did win they would probably put extra on the private motorist to make up the loss in Revenue.

Many still think the last protests failed. The haulage industry got tax concessions elsewhere which made lots of them happier and satisfied. Since then pump prices have risen so I guess what the Government gave the haulage industry in one hand, they took off the rest of us in another.

Fuel duty only increased recently by what was it, 0.7p or something? Why the sudden fuel protests anyway? They have not protested at every other duty increase, so why this fairly small one?

I think its more to do with the rate at which it is increasing. IIRC did they not delay the rate rise at the lat protests? Delaying a rise for 12 months is at least some sign that the government actually give a monkeys.

I also think this sliding thing they are on about might be a reasonable idea assuming its given to everyone and not just "rural". Although even that is likely to be open to manipulation by the government.

Once it past the £1 a litre mark the rises have just come quicker and quicker. Couple that with VAT, couple that with small business sentiment being about as low as it possibly can be then its probably about time something was done.

The taxation system as a whole needs re-assessing but no government is going to do that.

I will be supporting them along with 50 of my friends and we will be bringing Newcastle to a standstill.

So you solution to reducing the fuel costs, is to stop me getting to and from work on time? I'm sure David Cameron will really be upset by that, and cry into his prawn cocktail while I'm being docked wages for being late due to bellends blocking my route to work.

Congrats.

So the protests are to slap the government in the face by releiving them of tax for a couple days.

And you're telling everybody to "fill those tanks" in preparation. Which will generate a load of tax for the government.

I actually LOL'ed hard at this.

But yes i do agree with the above quote. Kinda doesn't get anywhere. In fact it never does!

You need half the country to protest before anything happens and tbh when is that gonna happen?

I'm afraid I agree with the OP. I mean what other option is there? It's not like parliament listens unless you do something major.

Really.. can't win anyway at this point in time.

If we take "greener" transport, ride a bike or even walk to work, then the gov get's less money and so put's prices go up.

If the prices are lower.. the fuel runs out quicker.. which in turn increases prices as it runs out (many years yet though).

The only real answer is to try and sort the economy out so that the pound gets stronger against the dollar there by reducing prices at the pump. That of course leads to the increased prices due to lack of supply lol.

I'm considering riding a bicycle to work now even though it's about 9 miles one way (at least) or dangerous moorland roads with quarry lorries, then fast moving traffic on the main roads, and I'm an inexperienced cyclist. The fuel bill is killing my finances.

It is a real shame that we destroy the livelyhood of the independents just so we can make a point to the government. But something has to give I believe. TBH, at least the truckers are standing up for everyone.. rather than the 'I'm OK Jack' crowd.

It was about 4p after the VAT was taken into account (The same VAT that, when reduced, resulted in extra duty being added to make sure it didnt affect fuel prices).

It is now getting to the stage where fuel is quite ridiculously expensive. This is because the majority of the price is tax.

Brief idea of what the price of petrol was (in 2008) made up of

The OP is referring to hauliers, the increase to them was the duty alone at <1p

Any other increase is down to cost of product...

Those of you saying it's a waste of time - what do you propose regarding the excessive levels of tax on fuel?

There's too many cars on the road anyway IMO, so better get those off the road who don't need to be.

If you don't like it try to find work closer to home or use another form of transport, otherwise you have to pay.
