Ok I have a GTX580 other than my initial problem everything has been brilliant.

Turned off my PC as normal last night and when I woke up I turned it on and halfway through booting the screen went funny and then the PC restarted itself. Thought nothing of it. Anyway get in to Windows fine and load up a game, when the loading screen appears I get these white things all over the screen, not one or two but loads of them and then my whole system crashed. I tried booting up again and loading in to the game and everything seemed fine.

Never had this happen before so just wanted to check.

Thanks :)

Do a memtest, check all temps. But it does sound like the GPU is starting to fail or under a lot of heat.

It could be the start of a failure.

Are you overclocking the GPU? if so, back off a little.

Complete driver removal and re-install, maybe.

What should I download to do a memtest as this is happening more often now in all games I play :( Temp on GPU was 60 when it just happened.

RMA it. Just to be sure, I would reinstall the graphic drivers before you do - check the clean install option. Probably won't make a difference, but better than the RMA being rejected and wasted postage/charges if it is just drivers.

Hi mate do you mean driver cleaner type thing?

Thanks

It's all at stock mate.

Will have a look :)

It's really strange, I can sometimes run a game 3 mins later it happens or I can play for hours -.-

I had similar with my 8800GTX back when it was about a year old. Games would just crash and give the nvlddmkm.sys error message and it would sometimes freeze or restart the computer.

I tried everything, and could sometimes even run FurMark overnight no problems, but other times it would crash after a couple of minutes.

Unfortunately graphic cards are one of those things that can go partially wrong which makes them very difficult to troubleshoot, especially when drivers can cause a lot of problems themselves.

If you have reinstalled your graphic drivers, and run tests such as FurMark and are still getting the issue, then just RMA it.

google memtest86+ burn to CD-R. reboot and boot off the burned CD. Give it atlease a few hours to test.
Edit: Now you can install to USB stick and boot off it that way.

Cant give direct link as it is hot linking.

OP, note: this is a PC memory test, not a graphic card test. I.e. if it fails then you have a faulty stick of RAM.

Or does memtest86+ test GPU now as well?

Hello, I see you are running highly overclocked i7. While it has most likely nothing to do with your problems I would make sure that you can reproduce the crashing bug with CPU at stock settings before RMA - just to be sure.

Have not managed to test this yet been a little busy :(

Hi mate, forgot to edit signature, CPU is at stock due to issues.

Seems BFBC2 was run today with no issues. Apparently the WSOD was a driver issue with the 580. Still doesn't explain the artefacts I've been getting on WoW and the crashing.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice.

Ok have tested this lots on many different games and the only crashing I get is on WoW. I can game for 1 min and it happen or 10 hours and it happen. Can play for 2-3 days and it not happen.

BFBC2 and any other game I've tried works fine, no crashing, artifacting etc. After searching around it seems a fair few people have this with their GTX580 and WoW.

Just thought I'd post an update in case anyone searched and had the same problem as me.
