How far advance are Germans and Jap cars in 2011.

Focus is made in Germany. Mondeo is made in Belgium, if I recall correctly.
Auris is made in UK, and that probably has to do a lot with perceived "solidity". In general Japanese brands are not very lucky with European production. The moment European factory execs try to show "how it should be done" people just stop buying cars - vide Nissan and Mitsubishi in last 15 years.

The Mondeo has always been built in Genk and the Focus in Saarlouis. The cars are made elsewhere around the world too but I suspect most, if not all of the ones in the country have left those plants.

Ford designed the engine along with Yamaha. They are also dropping the |5 Lolvo engine in favour of a 2 litre 'ecoboost' engine in the forthcoming Focus ST.

You do also realise Ford owned Volvo at the point they used these engines as well?

As for the bodywork comment, that's one of those stupid misconceptions; like all German and Japanese cars are 100% reliable.

Good and valid points. We are talking about mass production here.

I must, however take issue with the body work point. I have owned quite a few fords, fiestas an escorts, my last fiesta was a 51 reg purchased brand new.

Let me put it this way, I now drive a Volvo the same age with twice the miles on it.

Apologies
Probably a muddled post.

What I was trying to get at was, are german and japanese cars still the best cars to go for in terms of reliability, or are other manafacturers just as reliable and built as solid today..

Porsche are thinking about building parts of their cars in CHINA!

I don't think the Japs are anywhere nearly as advanced as they were 20 years ago.

Put it this way in the very early 90s you could find features such as automatic wipers, lights, Sat Nav, TV, proper onboard (trip)computer and auto dipping mirrors on certain Jap cars. These features are still pretty nifty even 20 years later. That's what I call advanced :).

Just look at what Porsche have done since the early 90s if you want an idea of how companies have changed.

Don't agree, If we talk in terms of pure reliability like the OP wants, French and Italian cars have come on leaps and bounds in the past 5 years, wouldn't really class American cars as unreliable either big lazy engines with not that much to go wrong.

daewoos, sorry i mean chevrolets dont tend to come with big lazy engines :p

Neither does the tripe Dodge turn out.

A factory in China makes whatever it's set up to make to whatever standard has been decided with whatever quality control procedures are implemented. Just because a hell of a lot of cheap tat comes out of there because a lot of people (including plenty of Westerners) set up factories there specifically to make cheap tat and send it all over the world, that is no indication that the Chinese and Chinese factories are only capable of making cheap tat. Would it surprise you to know that of my two Olympus DSLR lenses, one was made in China and the other in Japan, and they are of identical, very high, quality?
