Hi everyone, probably not the best thread for a new member to kick off with so please be gentle!

Anyway, I have a Thermaltake Bigwater WC setup . It was free and I've been running it for almost three years now with no problems, but I've not done any real overclocking with it.

I'm now looking to start properly overclocking my CPU (rather than just setting it at +20% in my BIOS) as it's getting on a bit - it's a Q6600. How would people recommend I go about it?

Thanks
G

Don't stress mate.

First up what do you use your system for? That is quite important, cos the best upgrade path is dependant on your use.

Might be a good idea to list in full your current system spec :)

OK, the most intensive things my system is used for are 3D CAD, Gaming, 3D film viewing.

And spec is as follows:
PSU - Tagan Dual Engine 800W
Mobo - Asus P5N32-E SLI
CPU - Q6600 (currently at 2.88GHz)
RAM - 4GB DDR2 OCZ
GPU - 8800 Ultra (HD 6950 in the post)
Cooling - TT BigWater 735 + Aquabay Reservoir
Sound - ASUS Xonar HDAV Slim (coming out when I put the 6950 in probably)
HDD - WD Caviar 7200rpm 500GB
BD-ROM for 3d Blu-Rays

(Also have an NZXT Phantom case in the post to replace my Lexa Blackline. Spent a small fortune in the last couple of days - hence wanting to OC my CPU as it's probably the bottleneck now.)

EDIT: CAD (SolidWorks) also used for analysing the models in FlowWorks etc.

You could probably overclock the Q6600 to 3.4 - 3.6Ghz. What is the vid on it? Mine has a high vid so i settled for 3.2Ghz with 1.45v.

Vid is currently 1.275. As I say I'm new to proper overclocking so haven't really played with anything yet, I've only ever had my mobo overclock for me. I would quite like to up my cooling a bit before I dive in and potentially up the temps a lot.

You have a lower vid than me, mine is 1.325. All i did to get to 3.2Ghz was 8 x 400 which gave me a ratio of 1.1, upped the voltage to 1.45v and Bob's your uncle. I'm just running on a cheap Freezer pro but i'm happy with that. You could probably hit 3.4 - 3.6Ghz.
