SRWare Iron 8.0.555.1 Released

I never saw the point in iron even though a few people tout it for it's "privacy".

The differences Iron's site lists:

http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron_chrome_vs_iron.php

Don't seem to indicate any security risk at all or privacy concern. The infomation sent to Google is for a valid purpose, to return a suitable error page for false URLs, to provide a suitable phishing page warning if you visit a site that a user has submitted as a potential threat.

Now that AdBlock Plus is on Chrome no other ad blocker can compete either.

I don't see any need to change user agent on a desktop browser.

The mention of Google being sent data on where Chrome was downloaded is useful, why wouldn't it be? This way harmful sources can be tracked/dealt with.

Google Updater is useful and invisible (as in never intrudes) , it keeps my Chrome 10 dev channel version up to date without me having to do anything and uses no resources.

All this "phone home" stuff is more sensationalist headlining than anything else tbh :/

Also to mention most of those things can be turned off in the options menu anyway.

The only one that cannot be turned off is:

Installation Randomly generated token included in installer. Used to measure success rate of Google Chrome.

But hey if people feel safer for using it then fair enough :) I'm happy with my Chrome.

I think rather than specific concerns, it's for people who have a reluctance in principle to let large private corporations (or anyone else for that matter) have any more information about them than absolutely necessary.

I'm not really a tinfoil-hatter (I use Chrome and don't lose any sleep over what Google might be doing with the info they're getting from me), but I do think it's a valid point of view and I can see where they're coming from.
