The W124 500E was an extraordinary car, built and developed with close co-operation between Mercedes Benz and Porsche. The 500E is perhaps the ultimate 'Q' car.
Even today only a few enthusiasts know of this 'special' car. Produced from 1990 to 1994 each 500E was hand-built by Porsche. Assembly involved each chassis being transported back and forth between the Mercedes plant in Sindelfingen and Porsche's Rossle-Bau plant in Zuffenhausen. In total it took a full 18 days to complete each model.
Many detail changes were made to the standard W124. The naturally aspirated V8 engine produced 322bhp with 480nm of torque and featured Jetronic electornic ignition. Brakes were uprated to 300mm discs with 4 piston calipers and 278mm discs on the rear, suspension was lowered by 9mm. The front of the car was totally changed to accommodate the large V8 with a wider front apron, the battery was relocated to the boot. Flared wheel arches were provided front and rear to accommodate the wider 8 hole alloy wheels.
The interior featured electrically controlled and heated front seats trimmed in Sportline cloth and leather with rear wood centre console between the rear seats. All the usual luxury features were included such as climate control.

From 1990 to 1994 (model years 1991-1994), Mercedes-Benz sold a sport version of the W124, the Mercedes-Benz 500 E (W124.036). The 500 E was created in close cooperation with Porsche; each 500 E was hand-built by Porsche, being transported back and forth between the Mercedes plant and Porsche's Rossle-Bau plant in Zuffenhausen, Germany during assembly — taking a full 18 days to complete each model. Design began in 1989 and into 1991.[2]. Called '500 E' through model year 1993, for model year 1994 it was face-lifted along with the rest of the range and renamed to 'E 500'.
