Seriously, what's the point? Attention seeker, I guess, although I still don't get why he had the book thrown at him (hur hur) unless he was topping that with verbal idiot rage?

On the flip side, I must admit I'm a bit perplexed as to why the flag burning that goes on doesn't seem to be jumped on as keenly as book burning. Firstly it's inciting hatred, secondly, it's a fire hazard and dangerous. H&S would have a field day. :p

Burning a Bible/Koran/Torah/etc = offensive to those following a religion/ideology
Burning a flag = offensive to those of the flag's nationality

But we don't really seem to care about someone burning a flag so much (should we?) as it's just a token gesture and it's hardly damaging to the nation. I wonder why people can't see the book burning rationally and just think "LOL... moron"?

My brain cogs are clunking away here... Will I be arrested if I go and burn a load of L.Ron Hubbard books in a brazier in Trafalgar square?

Sorry to start another religion thread... :D

Why are people under the illusion its a free country? When was the last time we were truly free?

I'd be annoyed if I saw anyone burning any book at all (except maybe any of Jordans), but then, I am a bit of a freak with books. You don't fold corners, spill drinks on them, mark them or general disrespect them. Not sure why, probably comes from my book fascination when I was a kid. I had over 1000 by the time my mum and dad split when I was 9. Saved about 100, my dad burnt the rest :(

I thought we were a free country. Is there anything else that's illegal to burn as well a Koran?

Where in the article does it say he was arrested for burning the Koran?

He was arrested for racially agrevating behaviour which would be the same for someone burning the bible in a town centre. Had he chosen to perform the burning privately in his own home instead of being an attention seeking idiot I doubt the police would have been notified or interested.

I'm a bit perplexed that he was arrested on suspicion of using racially aggravated threatening words or behaviour.

Shouldn't it be religiously aggravated?

How exactly is burning a religious book "racist" ... there are black Muslims, white Muslims, purple Muslims, etc.

He wasn't arrested for burning the Koran. It helps if you read the article rather than doing a Daily Mail.

Hrm..

The man was arrested on suspicion of using racially aggravated threatening words or behaviour.

No clarification as to whether the book burning was the aggravated behaviour in question? Hazy memory but wasn't someone investigated some time ago after a video of a book being burnt was posted on Youtube?

the remains of a book seized.

That suggests that the item was taken for evidence, but I did say in the original post, I had no idea whether that was what he was arrested for or not. The police weren't present at the time - it was reported by a member of the public so who knows?

I didn't want another "OMG Muzlimz" thread, I'm just genuinely intrigued as to whether burning religious text is/should actually be a crime.

To be honest, until they start burning people I couldn't care a hoot.

This is pretty much my stance. Surely people have a human right to make themselves look an idiot as long as they're not causing harm to anyone else. Arresting people for burning a mass-produced book just seems stupid to me, but maybe I'm just being insensitive.

FTR - I hate book burning - old books are like old friends, it's great seeing all the great ones you've read up on the shelf - they tend to trigger great memories. :D

I'm pretty sure the guy was in the middle of a street causing as much of a disturbance as he can burning the book, shouting etc.

I just do not expect that he was quietly burning the book without drawing attention to himself.

How do you mean? That you think burning a Koran is OK as long as no-one is burnt or that being arrested for burning a Koran is OK unless the penalty for doing so is being burnt?

For the record, I am against Koran burning and all violence whether religious or not. However I don't think that burning the Koran should be illegal in this country.
