Then they are screwed because the age of cheap fuel is over and soon the commutes they claim to be unable to avoid will not be affordable. People must find a way to adapt. Saying you have no choice won't help you when the day your outgoings exceed your income arrives.

So what do you suggest they do? Relocate to an area they cant afford to live?

Bad situation all round really.

Iv got 2 houses in pontypridd that i would ALMOST consider selling buy one get one free, its just not as simple as that in that area.

Sad but true.

Situations like this can bring the best out in people (New business ventures, change in career, ect)!

We got public transport here, it costs too much, isnt reliable and isnt getting any cheaper in the future.

There is help out there though (if youre determined enough). And yes I know how hard it is. I've tried a couple of ventures in the past. Sadly none of them really kicked off. That hasnt put me off though. The moment I have another idea I'll try again.

You got my full admiration then, this country seriously needs more people like you.

Pft.... Whether I get anywhere is a different story all together.

But it can be done. Sometimes skill alone can help kickstart a new business. My boss started out in his bedroom lol  .

Eventually you reach the point where it's cheaper to just go on the dole.

Right now we're just at the stage of "tightening our belts" as politicians like to call it, so we're still managing. But with all the moaning about how a lack of spending is ruining the economy, the politicians may wish to think about creating an environment more suitable to spending.

That's their job, not ours, and not making us spend so much on fuel would be a good start.

Those on the dole are fully aware of this lol. Why take on a poorly paid part time job when the council can easily match or exceed what employment is offering. Its a complete joke.

So now we have young families breed children they cant afford to take care off.

Please dont get me started on subject of benefits.... I'll grow another grey hair

There are 2 trains of thought with this, one is that eventually you will crack it if you keep trying and ring the bell.

The other is that the golden age is passed.

Me if im honest and was starting over id relocate to the best job working for someone my skills allowed and **** running a business.

You can only hope with higher world fuel prices, that manufacturers look at improving fuel efficiency even further akin to the situation during the 70s and the oil crisis then.

Which was my point, our public transport is frankly crap

Yea its crap and its not getting any better any time soon so using what works in Japan as an example has no value does it.

Problem with public transport is it continues to use the hub and spoke mentality in an age of suburbs and business parks that means that "local" workers have orbital commutes.

For example when I worked at Marconi and had a 10 minute drive into work. To do that on PT would have taken a bus ride into Liverpool town centre and another ride out again at a slightly different angle, taking over an hour.

Of course the people who still work in the city centre (eg. council and bus company staff) are well served by PT, and Londoners are adequately served by the tube*, so PT must be suitable for everyone, right?

*Though they still moan about it

Perhaps youre right.... BUT the recession has kicked in YO. Businesses are being obliterated. Its open season lol!

Do you know how many business ventures we get offered a month, obviously not, but its probably 10.

Out of that 7 are absolute ****ers. 2 might with the grace of god work but we dont fancy. 1 is probably ok but we dont like the people. Then 1 every year comes along that got a chance.

Business's that are obliterated are ****ed for a reason, im telling you the days of the free dinner are over.

Im not telling lies years ago you could buy into a business, run it into the ground, cash up the assets and walk away with 70k for a few months work, them days are gone. If you aint got a worlds first idea or a way of doing something successful cheap its just not happening now.
