More book burning..

Ignoring the retarded Godwin, you do realise that a truely liberal point of view would be to allow book burning to go ahead don't you?

No the liberal point of view is that being against a religion is racist, so long as the religion has a large non-white majority.

Sure there is, you burn the quran for a reaction to your statement, you know it is going to incite a reaction from those who do revere it. The same as if you say "I hate war" and then pee on a memorial. It is offensive.

If you burn the quran (or any revered symbol) in privacy fine, the intent is not to offend as there is no one to offend, however if you stand in the middle of the highstreet and do it, then the intent is clear.

Muslims preach on our streets inciting hatred and we tolerate it how should this man be any different? Just youtube videos and see for yourself.

The public and our leaders fear Muslims because we all know what they're cappable of. Remember that politician who was assassination for his comments against Islam? (think he was Dutch) or the Labour MP that was stabbed?

I was under the impression that incitement to hatred required you to incite hatred against the group in question and not yourself...

So what? I hadn't realised it was now illegal to be offensive.

So as long as we make political statements quietly where no one can hear you it is OK? Pathetic.

It shouldnt be different and in the examples you mention, were the instigators not arrested an charged?

Are Imams and hate preachers not arrested, or refused entry on a regular basis?

We no more tolerate incitement to hatred from muslims than we do anyone.

You want to be a teacher?

Hmmm.

We don't deport people for holding a different view than us. If we did then they'd just do it underground rather than openly.

What has that got to do with it?

I cannot understand how you cannot see that burning the Quran (which holds a reverence for a specific group and is a symbol of their faith) in a public place is not going to be offensive to them simply because you make a statement of your personal belief.

Also stating that being offensive in the way I described regarding the memorial is acceptable (and it was illegal when a student did it not long ago), and equating intentionally inciting a group with the knowledge that the statement you are making is not the words but the offence you know will be made with an acceptable form of political statement is not something I would be happy you teaching my children anymore than I would find an Imam preaching intolerance to them either.

Because burning someone's holy-book or something they hold in reverence with the knowledge that it will cause great offence is exactly that, intolerant and just because some members of the group you are offending are just as offensive of you or even more so, is not reason to be the same.

I would rather the teachers of my children taught them to rise above that sort of behaviour.

I am quite disappointed RDM, I understand your concerns about Islam and to some extent agree, but advocating burning Qurans or Bibles or any symbol that you know will cause great offence just to underscore a political or personal point is wrong, in my opinion.

Anyway rant over, as we were.:)

Burning the book is very simply done to offend. There's no other reason behind it. It's not as if he thought "Ah hrm. I have one more Koran than I need, I'd better head off to town and burn it".

I don't like blasphemy laws, or anything that gives any special protection or priviledge to religion.

But it doesn't matter here if it was a Karl Marx book, the Koran, the Bible or Harry Potter books, it's all the same to me if someone is trying to create a disturbance.

What about the poppy burning? does that not count as inciting hatred?
EDL went there to sort them out, good for them while most people are too concerned with what's going to happen on Eastenders they're out there defending us.

I don't agree with Poppy burning either, but I don't need to lower myself to the level of those idiots either.
