I'm not religious at all and neither is my wife, we're wanting to move soon and are having to do grown up things like consider schools.

Looking at official reports education in Bristol seems to be pretty naff. All the best schools are C of E, where the child has to be baptised before being allowed to enrol.

It would be hypocritical to baptise our son, but if it means he gets a better education then I am considering it.

No

Your principles define you - if you bend them to the will of others you lose your identity in the world and become a slave to the system.

Look at it this way, you don't believe in god so what harm will some silly ceremony involving some water do? I'd certainly do it if it meant my child was getting a better education. I went to a C of E school myself but I'm not some religious nut now. ;)

I'd feel a bit of a hypocrite if I did as I'm not a religious person.

I find it had to believe only C of E schools are the only option.

If they're the best schools, do it.

You're offering your child the best start and they'll get to see some religion, which I found (having gone to a C of E junior school) helped me make up my mind to not follow god.

How? it's not you going to the school it'd be your kid.

You are not forcing them to be religious nor are you forcing them not to.

Arguably it's giving them a wider view of things.

I went to a C of E primary school but I was never baptised! Although that could be that we lived in the middle of rural Derbyshire so the only other option was a 40 minute trek to Derby (my primary school was 5 minutes away from home) :p

Whats the point of them asking people to baptise their children if the values behind the religion are not followed?
Surely its pointless for them to request it?

Having said that, i'd probably baptise mine if this was the best case scenario just for their education.

Yea I know it's not me, but it is essentially the entrance in to Christianity so I wouldn't feel right doing it, then dismissing the values of the church, what's the point in doing it at all?

Perhaps they're the only free option.

OP, are there any grammar schools in the area you're moving to?

Yes perhaps, it is a shame if that is true, I went to an excellent public school.

They'll instil them at school....oh gawd how i remember the assembly, complete with bible readings and singing.

For the child maybe, but at home it would be different as the family are not following that style of life.

Tough one. YOu want the best education for your kid but at the same time you don't want to be that immoral, or at least misleading, douche.

I *think* I'd be the douche in this case. Education is an important thing for your child.
