So I got a pair of beats pro by dr dre as a gift. Was wondering if my current sound card, (supreme fx x-fi) its the sound card that comes with the rampage 2 extreme motherboard would do these headphones any justice.

If not can anyone suggest some good sound cards ? Ignore budget for now.

You said ignore budget but the Xonar DG, plus possibly a headphone amp will see you good.

I had the same card on my Crosshair IV, and the DG blows it away. :)

Whatever I may think of Dr Dre head/earphones, a motherboard's on-board audio, or add on card, wont do any half decent pair of headphones any justice.

Any of the Xonar range would be decent.

So did a quick search and saw a xonar DG and it says it has a built in headphone amp for £22. Would that be sufficient ? Seems very appealing at that price.

What are my other options ?

Just get the cheapest creative or asus card you can get (the Asus Xonar DG looks good).

The Dr Dre Beats are mostly fashion accessories, marketed as premium upgrades to stock earbuds that come with mp3 players, hence they don't require a dedicated headphone amp to reach their full potential.

I've listened to them extensively and as expected, they deliver the usual "U" shaped frequency response, i.e. boomy bass, sucked out mids and overemphasised monotone treble. Sounded slightly better than the Bose Triports ... i.e. crap.

Please can you inform me what you think of the Dr Dre Beats. Would like to know more info, sound quality so on :)

Its hard to explain since I dont really know much when it comes to this topic. My friends sennheiser 650's sounded 'cleaner' and clearer, the pro's get overwhelmed by the bass most of the time. Its kinda distracting and annoying when watching films (Inception for example).

Its not really a problem with the music that I listen to though, feels like im near the speakers in a club with these headphones on. Its a nice experience. It certainly changed my opinion on a lot of songs.

Build quality on these are amazing. They are heavy but I dont find it to be that much of an issue. Only issue I had is that they are a bit tight on the ears but its something you get used to.

Im lucky these were a gift because when I saw the price I was shocked. I mean they look like they cost 300+ but they don't sound it after listening to the 650's. These are amazing headphones, the best I've ever had but definately not worth the money.

This was all done on a pc that has a titanium x-fi sound card.

So anyway a temporary solution I found is using the headphone jack on my speakers. They kinda act like an amp. Sounds a lot better now but you get background static. Im probably gonna save up for the xonar essense stx though.

I had the same experience when I listened to them in store, they were too bassy and not detailed enough, my HD595 (and 555) are far more detailed even if they are less bassy but are more punchy, if that makes sense. As in, they're bassy in all the right places instead of overwhelming you with bass on any low note like the Beats do.

Any Xonar will do great at driving any of these cans.

As said get a decent soundcard, how ever i disagree with buying a headphone amp ASWELL. Reason being as far as im aware they are "amped" any way, or atleast the ones i tried instore a while ago were, with 2 batteries in one earcup.

2 batteries are beats studio, the pro' version dont have batteries. I think they do need an amp as the sound isnt as good on an iphone 4.
