Install two PSU's or buy a new single 1000watt PSU for running SLI GTX 580

There's a very good reason for that...

Regulation/ripple is rather rough on cooler master stuff.
The ripple was great but the voltage regulation was not
Summary
Rounding off to the nearest 0.5 as I usually do below the 9.5 total score level, the Silent Pro M at one thousand watts just barely misses a recommendation. Some aspects of this unit were among the best I have ever seen, but still others were among the blandest I've ever seen. That combination does nothing to help the score. Fortunately, if you are looking for a unit this powerful, this power supply is not a bad choice at all.

The Good:
fantastic ripple and noise suppression
held up full power at temperatures higher than rated spec
excellent low load efficiency
best quality FSP build I've seen in years

The Bad:
voltage regulation only so-so due to group regulated design

I used a really great Thermaltake Toughpower VGA booster when I had SLI 8800GTX's.
Had 650W and 65Amps over the two rails, and slotted in to 2x5.5 slots. Cost £50 or so, which made it much much better value than buying a 800W+ PSU which imo are overpriced. My brothers still using it to this day, wisper silent also.

With a decent sized case and a bit of modding it could probably be added to many places on the larger cases. I know people were using them for Tri GTX setups back in the day.

Stop posting silly nonsense and build the damn thing :D. Joking of course, extremely nice system you've bought sir (tips hat in appreciation). I hope the build goes well ;).
Thanks JD...

Would love to of started building it striaght away, but i got play around making sure all my C: drive is backup up first before formating.and then i need to go shopping at a DIY for some house stuff before the shop closes.

Really wish i ordered an SSD at the same time now..:(

Without a doubt I would never run two psu's in the same system. Asides from the noise and increased space usage it could introduce strange electrical effects from mixed rails. If you are hungry for power I think you can get a 1.8KW psu now (google)

I went the whole hog and got a Toughpower 12oow PSU for my 480's in SLI and its just great on my 580s now. I think out of all the things you need a good quality powerful PSU, especially if you're going to have SLI 580's!

sorry to hijack but will a corsair ax850w(70a) be fine for 580sli? im looking at the same rig as you but with just 1 msi 580 for now and a cheaper psu.so i would have to power a 4.8GHZ OC too and 1 HDD.

also how future proof is these psu's? will card start using 2x8pins shortly and if so what then? do you use the 6+2 and use a 6pin to 8pin cable for the 6 pins and run it like that? is that safe?

Ah yeah thatl do the biz. If you really wanna put it through its paces then download OCCT and run the psu test for a few hours to stress max amps so you know the psu is definatly up to the job.

An 850w PSU should be ok with no overclocks..

But If your looking at overclocking then your going need a higher wattage PSU then 850watts..

Google "Dual PSU 24-Pin Adapter Cable" or "Lian Li Dual Power Supply Adapter Cable" ready made cable for linking 2 power supplies together. It's very easy I would do that to servers in the past that required more power then you could buy in in one PSU.

How to do it yourself and make the cable. Did this many times and worked fine.

One of the PSU's will act as a slave and normally on the slave I would stick things like graphics cards, fans and other cooling gear. The master PSU must connect to the motherboard and power the motherboard and any CPU power cables. Also a quick not... It's better to use 2 of the same power supplies, that way they both have the same startup time.

Ive been using dual power supply for 2 years know with no problems I run a akasa powermax 850w anda corsair tx 650w. Rigged up a relay from the 850 to switch on the 650. The 850 runs motherboard and 3x4870 1gb and the 650 runs all my case fans 10 intotal ,6 cathode ray tubes and all my 6 hardrives and my ssd drive

Thanks..

That very cheap for a 1000watt Modular PSU..:)

Well, I got a Tagan BZ 1100 watt for £101 =D

It was the last one in stock at OCUK so I grabbed it. Its my second Tagan PSU and both the ones I've had have been brilliant.

Would this Antec 900 watt PSU be any good for the OP?

The GTX 580 SLI only uses a bit under 800 watts.

Or this 850 watt XFX, but its out of stock:

Guess you missed my other thread and link to it (post 53 ;) )

I ended up buying a Corsair Professional Series™ Gold AX1200 High Performance 1200W Power Supply (CMPSU-1200AXUK) [CMPSU-1200AXUK ]
