Hi guys,

I'm in real need of Motivation, for my Uni assignments. Since my Dad has passed away, I've found it really difficult to concentrate. I applied for Mitigation but that's getting looked at in the 2nd week of Feb. I have an assignment to hand in tonight and one for Sunday, and 2 others which have gone by. I thought I could do them but it's just not happening. Concentration just isn't helping.

Plus my semester 2 starts the week after next, I'm thinking of doing the assignments next week so I'm fresh for semester 2.

Any techniques for motivation? Could really do with the help...

You've applied for mitigating circumstances, but have you also talked to a personal tutor or somebody?

As odd as it sounds because of your dad passing away it may be worth seeking professional help for these times. Don't let anything build up. Or you can bury your head for a bit and talk it out on your work. Sounds slightly unhealthy but doing well will help.

Get off OcUK for a start :p

Im not one to talk as I dropped out of Sixth form, so I know its hard, but just get it done no matter what, but take breaks ever 45 mins - hour to keep things fresh :)

Yeah I have, it's just getting down to do the work. Which I can hopefully from next week. There isn't much to do, it's just sitting down and getting it done.

And I don't really spend much time on here. Got to much on at the mo. :\

Sorry to hear about your dad mate. I'm in the same situation with my dissertation project - I'm weeks behind now as I didn't do any over Xmas and thus the workload is now huge.

But as someone just said ^ - take regular breaks and you'll be ok. Work for half an hour, take a quick break etc. Its something to look forward to and you will feel fresh when you go back to it.

Its working for me so far! :p

I was about to post something similar.

If you're struggling to come to terms with his passing and it's having a negative effect on you then it might be a good idea to speak to your GP or a counsellor (your uni might offer this service).

I've come to terms with it, I think I'm just finding it difficult getting back into the Uni routine. I spoke to the student liason people, and my personal tutor. They said do the work to the best of your ability and not to worry too much.

I'm the sort of person who does not like things piling up. Guessing it's just that kicking in. Hopefully next week it will be all done and dusted! Really appreciate the replies.

Whenever I had work to hand in I found the best motivational tool was to leave it to the last minute. In my final years of schooling I don't think I handed in a single essay that wasn't completed the night before the deadline.

Sometimes if I really need to get stuff done, I can work myself into the motivated state just by thinking about it lots. - I can sit on the bus, or at lunch or something, and just imagine all the consequences of not doing it, and try to get a bit upset and panicky if possible. Then when I get home I'll just jump on it! :)*

*Although if the work doesn't matter at all, then this doesn't work - i.e. my DT coursework. :o

But the problem here is that the deadline has already passed on 2 pieces! :p

Sorry to hear about your dad...

Perhaps practice some breathing exercises to help you cope and focus better. I'm sure any reasonable academic institute will give you special consideration if it is a causing endangerment of exam failure.

Hope you start feeling better soon....

i find the best motivation comes from speaking to other people, sharing each others difficulties and it soon puts thing in perspective. losing your dad is one of the hardest things (i can only imagine and sympathise) that one will go through but other people will pull you through. try to communicate with friends and family and do your utter best not to alienate yourself. also, look at the bigger picture; i personally would put uni on hold until i was in a better place/state of mind to give it the attention it needs. i personally would get away from it all, re-asses and come back when i was ready.

Hey dude, sorry to hear about your situation. Had basically the same problem myself- my father passed away last year, and i've found it very difficult to get back in to studying since. Happened just before my finals, and the uni was great, just said to forget anything I had due and go home for as long as I needed. Now I'm back, with a few bits of leftover coursework to finish for the start of next week, and no motivation to get it done. I've found regular breaks help, as said, but I never had all that much motivation in the first place, so it's taken until today for the fear to hit so I actually get myself down the library.

I don't have any magic words of wisdom for you, sorry, just letting you know you're not alone in that situation :)

Allowing it to build up will only make it worse so get something handed in and continue with the mitigation process. I've had two friends in the same situation as yourself and my sympathy's are with you but make sure you're proactive about it all otherwise it's going to snowball

This thread is borderline medical advice but I'll just add my 2 cents.

If you're a high achiever, then I highly recommend that you don't push yourself because that just makes it worse. Go easy on yourself and take some time out if you need it.

Good luck and am sure you'll make the correct decision.
