Hey guys

I currently have an Asus HD5870 and generally, its great and performs well but am getting really ****ed off with the niggles over the last few months!!

My main issues are driver support, underscan issues in Crysis (and will it happen in Crysis 2??), random BSOD (even after format which I put down to recent driver releases since 10.4a), high idle volts / clocks / temps (fixed now, but did my head in).....plus others!!

My question is, is now a good time to ditch and get a GTX570??
I have considered a HD6970, but am concerned that the same issues will haunt that!!??

I am no fanboi of either ATI or NV, but I have had better recent experiences with NV than ATI (GTX280 vs HD4870 + HD5870).

Any advice / opinions welcome

Thanks

HI thinking of doing the same to(have asus 5870) although trawling through game comparison performance graphs i dont think i would be impressed with the jump to the 570 don't think it would be noticeable. (ive my 5870 running at 970/1290 using afterburner) im monitoring the prices of the gtx580 ,i think that would be worth the jump though as the 5870 is a cracking card. the thing is though the 5870 is devaluing daily its a predicament

Well i went from a GTX 285 (slightly slower) to a GTX 570 and i love it, my FPS has double if not trippled in all games and i am now able to fully max everything including full AA,

Crysis however is still a power whore but i can run warhead maxed out enthusiast with 2xAA verry hapilly on a stock Q9550 cpu, i am planning to overclock back up to 3.6GHz to give me ateast 10fps extra like i used to get :)

So for me, it was worth it :D

You can do comparisons at anandtech

5870- 570 comparison

You could save yourself some money and flash a 6950 to 6970.
Success rate up to 12th January only 1 failed unlock.

Whatever card you go for, although the 5870 is a great card, the new cards are much, much smoother with less dips and higher average fps.
I have went from 5870 to flashed 6950 to 70 and I am very happy.

There is points for and against each card.

Also to let you know there have been complaints of coil squeel in both cards too although mine has none.

Handy link that - didn't realise Anandtech did that comparison thing - very useful, ta.

I'm almost certainly getting a GTX570 to replace my ageing GTX275 but the question is when. Prices are still high but is this because supply is still a bit low? Are they likely to drop in price much in the next month or so? If it'll be a few months before they drop then I'll just buy now but don't want to jump only to see the prices fall in a couple of weeks.

The GTX 560 is coming in a few days - 384 shaders and easy 1 Ghz+ overclocks.

Early leaked results are showing them running as fast as a GTX 480 / 570 when overclocked.

Hmm....more to add-in!!

I have seen:

Palit GTX570 Sonic Plat @ £281 (factory OC, aftermarket cooling, 2 year warr)
EVGA GTX570 SC @ £295 (factory OC, 10 year warr, 90 day step up)
Palit GTX580 @ £375 (BEAST lol)

Given the impending release of the 560 and the resale value of my 5870 (maybe £200 or is that overly hopeful?)....opinions??

5870s have been selling for £170 brand new the last few weeks (VTX version), £200 wil be a bit too hopeful. They are that much brand new for a decent brand:

After the GTX 560 comes out, I'd expect the resale value on the 5870 to be £150 max with a lot of luck, and the 5850 / 1 Gb 460 to be £100 especially with the number of people that are going to want to swap their current cards out for 560s.

Not really so nice for me either as I got my 460s on launch for £180, but I like them so much that I want the fully unlocked 384 shader 560s.

The 560 should hopefully factory OC'd cards on release, thats what i'm waiting for, hopefully they will be around £200 with close to reference 570 performance for less monies

I wnet from a 4890 to a 6970. Decent enough upgrade sure but I think the 4890 level performance is the limit for a worth while upgrade. Anything better than a 4890 ie. 280 or 5850/5870 et cetera I don't think it's worth the money.

Unless you're planning to game at 2560 x 1600 or something or eyefinity etc...

I would wait unless either of the above applies.

Wu

EDI:T £200 is MASSIVELY hopeful for a 2nd hand 5870 as they are £200 brand new. £120 I would expect.
