Right so after having my monitor (LG W2042S) for nearly 3 years, it has steadily developed a really irritating buzzing sound. Now I assume this is to do with the brightness control as it changes pitch when I adjust the brightness. It can sometimes be louder than my pc!!

Now if that weren't annoying enough, I have started to notice what appears to be refreshing lines across the screen. It isn't noticeable in windows, but as soon as I play any games, it becomes just visible.

All this is superficial and I can live with it, but the question I pose is, is my monitor on it's way out?

Buzzing is probably cause by the high voltage in the inverter. If it is out of warranty try opening it up and
check for some failing capacitors and replace it, otherwise rma it or have it check by a technician.

Cheers for the response. Yeh the monitor is way out of it's warranty and rma isn't really an option because proof of purchase has long since disappeared.

In terms of failing capacitors, what would I be looking for? (I know what a capacitor is, but rather what signs of failure would be apparent?)

Check this thread Click here there's some nice pix there of failing/bulging caps.Things to look for bulging,
leaking electrolyte on top or bottom of caps.Leaking usually dont occur if caps are not bulging so dont
confuse the glue/goo that the manu use to fix parts in place.

I noticed this when I brought a brand new Viewsonic 22" 1080p LCD monitor when everytime I increased the brightness or contrast, the buzzing would get louder or if I switched the monitor to eco mode, it will would be less audible.

I have since upgrade to a BenQ LED monitor and there is no buzzing comming from the monitor at all so I guess some buzz and some don't.

Have you increase the brightness/contrast recently or has the buzzing just suddently become louder?

@AtaRo, Cheers for the link! Will no doubt open it up and have a look. Will try post some pictures if I find anything interesting.

@hdpcgamer, Yeh I have played with all the settings. Adjusting the contrast/brightness settings just changes the pitch of the buzz. Some days I don't notice the buzz but other days it truly is surprising there isn't a bee hive somewhere in there.

I'm toying with getting an LED monitor, but no point throwing out something that can be easily fixed!!

Is there an easy fix though?

If it turns out that the only way to fix the buzzing is the bring the monitor in for repairs then I'd imagine that would probably end up costing a bit so might me a better idea just to upgrade?

Keep us posted if you manage to find a fix.

Yeh taking things to be repaired does not work with me. I refuse to pay the extortion that is charged for somebody to turn to me and say "we can't find the problem" when a few googles and a soldering iron can solve all the problems myself. Plus where's the fun in not tinkering yourself? :)

Will keep you guys posted if I manage to find a solution. But if not, it will be a time game until I throw it out the window if it gets any worse!
