I have figured out if I have a degree, I can get mega fast promoted and be able to get mega moniez.

Now, I would be doing my current job whilst doing the degree, so Im guessing open uni would possibly be the best bet?

I know the normal process is GCSE's, A-Levels, then Degree, but do you actually need the A-Levels? I have 2 NVQ level 2's (that combined with the key skills things are Apprenticeship NVQ's) if they are worth anything.

Any help would be appreciated, as I have no clue in the world of further education. :)

Aren't you a navy boy?

If so it doesn't really work like that but why not ask to be put through a degree at their expense, you'd probably have to go to one of the Armed forces unis tho.

Depends how old you are and how hard the course you want to do is. You can apply to be a 'mature student', or they might ask you to do a 'foundation year' before engaging the actual degree.

Yea I am in the Navy, and am planning on going down the officer route - and if I do this with a degree, you get a fast track sort of promotion to Lieutenant.

I will be looking at doing it under the Navys expense, but dont mind paying for it myself to be honest, as the rewards would more than outweigh the initial costs.

I am 20 years old, so I dont think the mature student thing would be too much of a problem.

With the open university thing, how - in a nutshell - does it work? Does it just involve a lot of time on your own researching and doing coursework with the occasional day in a classroom every month or so?

When my dad did an OU degree he only ever had to attend the exams, everything else was provided in reading materials and pc cds. This was about 10 years ago now though so it could all have changed.

Depends on the uni and your circumstances. Back in the day my dad was given an unconditional offer by one of the London unis!

Depends entirely on subject, course and tutor. I could answer better if I knew the subject, but for maths and science, they generally send you books/dvds/software and you can work at your own pace, augmented by tutorials (in person, video conferencing or message board) if you so wish.

With the Open University you just have to be able to afford the courses :)
He is highly likely to get significant financial support with the OU, unless he earns megabucks.

What rank are you now? I ask because you wont get promoted to Lt with just a degree you will have to go through officer selection, which is slightly different.

AB1 is my rank - I know a degree would not help me, as I am already qualified enough to be an officer. What I am saying is, with the degree, you go from a Sub Lt to Lieutenant in 2 years instead of 5-6.

Win win really, I get a degree for when I am outside, and get paid a lot more a lot quicker because of it. :)

Sorry But your not classed as "Mature" Untill 21, and most cases 25.

A Degree takes 3-4 years

If you dont apply now it will cost you £7k +

Uni is a full time thing, You cant be in the navy aswell as you simply wont have the time. (unless you do a worthless Open Uni or Subject)

You seem to think a degree is an easy thing to get?

what type of degree would you be wanting to do ? a lot of unis will take your working experience into consideration , worst case is you do a foundation degree for a year beforehand

best thing to do though is find what course you want to do then ask the unis what you need to get there , dont just look at the sites where it will say ***ucase points or whatever , actually go ask them and speak to someone in depth about it , they will help you out

You should really work out whether you've got what it takes to pass officer selection first.

If you have any doubt whatsoever (which in reality, always exists) then you could be wasting your money.

For example, even if you do pass officer selection, they may not offer you the branch you applied for. What then? Would you take it anyway? It's all a bit of an investment in something that in many ways is very much out of your own hands.

:edit: You need to speak to someone who has a clue about the officer selection process, and not just look at the pay scale/promotion progression of a graduate and see $$$$$$$$$$.

you can study the majority of courses part time , at many unis you can even do distant learning because all the lectures/notes/slides etc is on the internet

it IS an easy thing to get if your interested and work hard. id assume that in the navy he is used to working and not just a lazy layabout

how is it worthless ? it might be to me or you but to OP it is 'worth' a promotion , a promotion is not worthless but i guess your degree didnt teach you that ?

I wouldn't quite say that an open uni degree is worthless. Infact I'd rate it much better than most degrees because it shows a different level of commitment from the individual to that of most students.
