Hi guys,

Looking for assistance troubleshooting a hardware fault. My specs are as below:

Core i5 750 @ 3.7GHz
MSI p55 GD65
4 GB Geil RAM
Corsair HX650 PSU
5850

I built the machine myself approx 15months ago and all went swimmingly. This morning i turned the machine on at the wall and then proceeded to turn it on, on the tower. The fans spun for a couple of revolutions and then died - the house circuit breaker had tripped.

Upon resetting the breaker and checking fuses etc, when i press the power button i get nothing. Previously, when it was turned on at the wall, the power light would blink after a couple of seconds delay (i assumed this was the circuit charging in the PSU). But now it doesnt do that.

Is this most likely a popped PSU? Is there an easy way to check?

Thanks for any assistance!

First thing i'd do is try another power cable, if you dont have 1, use your monitor one just to see if things spin up, you may be that lucky.

Power Supply

The most likely thing it will be is the PSU but that may also have blown your Motherboard and anything connected to it. Look on the internet on ways to test your PSU by shorting two of the pins. If the PSU stays alive for about 5 mins then 60% chance that it works.

Invest in surge protector, you can get a basic one really cheap that will take for or five plugs, if you have alternate PSU that has enough wattage try that. It does sound like your PSU.

He would know if he has a surge,I don't think his monitor would work or have any lights if it was that.

In what order exactly did this happen?

Remove the PSU and try another one.

Have you tried moving the PC into another room? Why did it trip?

Unfortunately, i dont have another compatible PSU.

The computer had been on for 3 days solid before i turned it off at approx 12am last night. This morning i turned the surge protector 4-way plug on, i then proceeded to turn the tower on, the fans spun up and then stopped. i tried the power button again and nothing happened. looking at my alarm clock i noticed that it was off so i presume something failed as the computer started and it tripped the circuit.

I would suggest getting a cheap psu just to see if it boots up tbh even if you remove gpu ect atleast you will know everything is ok and it was just the psu that went.

I'm assuming you've tried plugging it directly into the wall? Any burning smell? What make was the PSU? :p

Its a corsair HX650 (7year warranty)

or at least 'was' it would seem.

I cant detect any sort of smell. it is now being plugged directly into a known working socket and still does nothing.

Do as jamesfreddie suggested and unplug the psu from everything switch the PSU off at the back short the green cable to a black one then switch it back on and see what happens
