cold fusion is finally here:or at least in Italy

If they all suddenly die of brain aneurysms or get assaulted by "unknown assailants" then they might have found something.
Then again big oil might use more subtle tactics these days to keep cold fusion under wraps.

No "big oil" would use the good old "right then folks here's a couple of pallets loaded with $5 billion in cash, do we have a deal?".

then back to their evil big oil hq for

"well that's the company's future sorted, bonuses all round?"

oil companies are some of the heaviest investors in alternative energy, they will be the future, they have the money for research and change of infrastructure.

They basically admit in their paper that by our current understanding of nuclear physics, such a reaction should be impossible, but then go on to say that it must be fusion anyway with no justification but their own observations.

Moreover, the paper seems to have very little actual physics in it. It's essentially giving some elementary background physics that any real physicist would already know, and then listing some results. They don't even give any illustrations of their experimental set up. It's no wonder the paper was rejected by peer review!

It's also worth noting that the Department's website lists Focardi as retired, and Rossi seems to have no credentials as a physicist at all.

I'd love for something like this to be achieved, but I'm 99% sure this is either another false positive or just a scam of some sort (not unlikely, since one half of the "team" seems to be more of an entrepreneur than a physicist).

Their paper isn't designed to be read by physicist but laymen an journalists so it sounds as plausible as an inverse tachyon beam and it must be ebil corporations keeping it down.

Do you have any reason for using "big oil" as your bogeyman, as opposed to, say, Illuminati or aliens? Or a secret group of magic users, if you want to go old school.

Do you realise that you've claimed that "big oil" has assaulted and murdered people in the past to cover up cold fusion? I'm asking in all seriousness because you're obviously a conspiracy believer, so you might not know what you're saying.

I never get the theory behind all this either. If there is such good technology then why the heck will big oil companies spend loads of money buying them out and then not actually profiting from the invention? Why spend billions searching for oil when you can just licence out a piece of technology like that? With a patent the licencing would bring in billions pretty quickly and cost them comparitively little.

Either way people will still need lots of oil (plastics and lubricants for a start) so the oil companies will still have plenty of exploration and oil selling to do...

People are afraid of change. Big oil and people with vested interests who have been making billions will not want to risk it all, even if it's in the best interest of humanity.

The US government relies on the existence of the petrodollar forcing other countries to buy dollars and allowing the US to maintain an enormous trade deficit. Oil is the main driving force in keeping the US a superpower.

I don't believe in coincidences. A lot of scientists involved in cold fusion and alternative energy seem to die suddenly.

I want to believe. I really, really do. The world needs something like this, and soon. But I was badly bitten the last time cold fusion was about to change the world. Those involved were deluded then, and -- sadly -- I'm anticipating a repeat performance.

I want to be wrong though.

Since you are now implying that (i) your bogeyman controls the USA government and (ii) your bogeyman has killed a lot of scientists, I'm inclined to believe that you are deranged. However, if you can substantiate your claims I'll change my mind. I don't mean referring me to some other people claiming the bogeyman killed lots of people - that is evidence that some other people believe it, not that it actually happened.

Huge sums of money are being spent subsidising alternative energy, even forms that are clearly impractical and wasteful, e.g. solar in the UK. Are you suggesting that's bait to draw out scientists so your bogeyman can murder them? If not, how do you explain it?

Eh, what? Did you actually read what I wrote?

Why would a large company not want to make a profit on something? The oil industry as a whole is very forward thinking in how it does business (in both how it explores and develops oil fields and renewables), they are right at the forefront of a lot of the technology we use today*. Why spend loads of money trying to hide something when that something could make them lots of money?

As for the US government, what does that have to do with big oil?

At least have a conspiracy theory that makes sense...

*As an example, the oil industry is the second largest user of magnetic storage, after the US government (ie HDDs and tapes). They pump billions into research for things like that as well as computing in general.
