Without wanting to come over all Magick... I think it was a comet or re-entry by a craft.

My internet is down I am using a poor O2 "unlimited" connection at the moment so I am hoping "quick to the overclocked internets" and the denizens that reside here will help.

Anyone aware of anything supposed to be in the night sky tonight?

I was taking the rubbish out the back and generally have a good look at the sky as I live in Coulsdon near the start of the M23, I think we are at the edge of the stacking pattern for Gatwick and can often see them circling.

What I saw though was a orange glow leaving a bit of a trail travelling roughly north to south not making any sound at all. It appeared very round, difficult to tell height but I'd say pretty high up.
 
For the millionth time it was a Chinese lantern, loads of them floating about lately, hell, I actually saw 5 drifting around tonight as I walked to the local shops.
 
There were loads of Chinese lanterns released new years where I live, they look pretty much how you have described.
 
Well now I am just very disappointed. I always wanted to see a comet or re-entering shuttle.

Now this is going to sound weird and some people will no doubt herp and derp about this post but....a few nights ago I was stopping by at a local Range store to pick up supplies on the way home from work and as their carpark is very dark on the side round the corner I though I would check out some beam luls with a new torch. I put it into spot mode and pretending that I WAS CHARGIN MA LASERS AT THE SKY when I notice a pulsating light shoot cross the sky.

It was a clear night, you could easily make out various constellations and other faint stars.

I have spent hours in the past photographing the skies to grab trails of stars, meteorites and so on and I have seen planes, satellites and shooting stars before as well as meteorites shooting across the sky but this one was pulsating on and off in one white colour, it was shooting upwards out of the sky and vanished out of the sky as it went up, still pulsating softly on and off.

It was definitely a UFO, not saying it was aliens as I do live in a town surrounded by several Military and MOD bases but it was pretty weird to watch! It had no contrail and had only one light which was the object itself, which was pulsating. It was moving a little bit slower than a shooting star, long enough to catch it shooting across but it didn't have a trail like a shooting star or meteorite.

So yeah, weird :p
 
Well I only just remembered about it, I was in a rush to grab supplies and get home to play Left4Dead, nothing can be allowed to get in the way of Zombie killing action :p
 
Chinese Lantern....

They are very popular lately, though I've yet to see anywhere actually selling them. But then I did see one made of a plastic bag once!
 
Ah, I see what you did there, you can see plane contrails if they're illuminated by the moon if there are any at the time and the moon is out in force!

Nexus, we set off chinese lanterns during the new year and xmas hols and they certainly didn't pulsate white, instead flickered a yellowish glow and only went only so high until they lost their burning wax :p
