How much do you think one would need to earn (per year) to live a comfortable (not rich) lifestyle?

No doubt your figures will vary from location to location.

I'm thinking about the £30k for someone living in or around London.

No chance - to live comfortably around London owning a house/car etc and still having a few luxuries you need 50+ imo

A decent living without worrying too much, and taking care of a few (not high end) luxuries, I'd say around 30k+ outside London, 50k+ in the South.

A comfortable salary is roughly paying no more than 1/3 of your total income on rent/mortgage.

This doesn't include gas, eleccy, water, council tax.

Anything else is a luxury or an extra. Such as house phone, sky tv, broadband, mobile contract etc.

I would try ensure that after everything leaves my account all bills and such I have at least 40-50% of my income free for spending/saving.

Apparently I earn about 56k but I was say its far from comfortable, the wife earns about 24k so in theory we should be well off. However having two little angels, nursery fees, clothing, cars, mortgage fuel, food etc were not comfortable. 40% tax rate does not leave much.

That would be fine for here (the Midlands) but not for London.

Ours bill probably total £500/month inc food
Car prob uses another £250
skiing + mexico this year = 6k
treats = ££££

I guess different people lives to their means differently

Between me and the other half we earn over 100k but still cant go mental on luxuries

You need to double that, at least, with 3 kids and I'm 50 miles north of London.

depends on your existing finance/accommodation situation.
You'll also always spend what you've got.
I'd say to be really comfortable you're looking at more like £40k outside of London, but that's from someone on around £30k who easily spends it all

50k to be comfortable outside of London? I suppose if you mean Surrey et al then sure but you could (and can) live very well on 50k and be more than comfortable on 50k.

Anything less would be classed as poverty.
