The above screen is on an XPS17 I'm looking at. Anyone got any opinions on it, good bad or otherwise?

It would be powered by a GT445M (for some light gaming) and an i7 740QM so thinking the lower than full HD res might be less of a struggle for the GPU/CPU?

How are Dell's generally viewed these days, been a while since I bought one?

Any thoughts appreciated.

One word....shocking!
Poor blacks, terrible viewing angles, nasty contrast. I ordered one, received it, turned it on and was so disgusted I sent it straight back. I expect it from an acer but not from a premium range like the xps. I ended up getting the 15 with the upgraded screen which was expensive but worth it.
Other than the screen the laptop was great. A lot of people are switching them out themselves. There is a big thread on a certain notebook forum

Thanks man. Like Dangerous, whilst the 15" screen upgrade might be better you can only get the GT445M in the 17" model. It's not a great card but better than the GT425M in the 15" models.

What GPU did you get on the 15" and how does it cope gaming on the full HD res?

I got the 435 nd i7. It clocks amazingly, run it 800/1600/950 :)
I play SC2, DOW2, SupComm2 at 1080p high settings but for FPS' I run them on 1600x900 with medium/high settings. I can run COD BO at 1080p on high with no AA/AF or shadows but prefer the higher frame rate of 1600x900
BFBC2 struggles at 1080p unless I set it to medium/low

I really wanted the 17" but the screen killed it. I even thought about replacing it. I may be fussier than your avarage user though and the screen is one of the most important things to me. The B+RG screen in the 15" was a £170 upgrade but its gorgeous
