I don't know if such a thing exists.... let me explain...

My young daughter is very intrigued by my first person shooters, which got me wondering, are there any fps games for young children ? Something that has the same mouse/keyboard mechanics as a normal fps but with a more youthful degree of colour and content like shooting paint or fried eggs or I don't know. Can't really give her bc2 or fear 2 to play afterall :)

Portal would be too tough for her. Nerf might be worth a look. Something that would be ideal would be something like a first person shooter where you have to run around with a paint gun and there are puzzles with different colours and you have to shoot them with the corresponding colour in your gun... or something like that.

Or a game where loads of evil food has escaped and you have to track it down and shoot it with a knife and fork or a spoon or something , depending on which type of food it is.

Are you sure she's not wondering what you're doing rather than giving her attention?

Positive. We play together a lot on the pc, initially online game sites like cbeebies and nick Jr, lately she has been greatly enjoying playing Lego star wars and Lego Indiana Jones and she is also now interested in "gunning" games. Though I think its mainly the walking about and seeing things react to her actions , like pots and tables falling over etc.

TF2 (with silly gibs turned on)

TF2 with silly gibs turned on is instead of blood, lots of random bits shoot out, like cogs, random shapes and stuff like that, also the game has a cartoonish look, so.
Example:

Also there was another game posted which is: https://www.digipen.edu/studentprojects/tag/
You get a paint gun and you use it to do different things and get around the map.

TF2 certainly meets the aesthetic requirements, can it be played/modded so that its bots you are against, which I can lower the attributes on to make it easier rather than online?

Yes, you can play in offline mode, so you just play against bots on easy/medium/hard.
