Hey guys,

There's around £40 in it, so which is best?

Will be gaming, and doing video/photo editing (Vegas Pro and Photoshop respectively) and building on a budget (Got Geil RAM, and looking at a HD5850 atm, so around £160 budget at the very max - just able to get a Phenom II X4 and Foxconn mobo, as opposed to Foxconn mobo Athlon II X4 and a cooler/speakers).

Thanks,
Alistair

That's a more significant difference then TomsHardware lead on.

Argh, if I find one for less than £110 then will definitely go PII X4, otherwise . . .

Its so worth the difference, remember I got both cpus, and its clear the 955BE is better/easier to overclock.

I personally didnt notice much difference going for an Athlon II X4 @ 3.6 and a Phenom II X4 @ 4ghz however there is a difference in benchmarks and video encoding. Gaming and general use I can't tell the difference

overclocked Athlon II quads are pretty even with phenom II quads. my athlon II quad at 3.8Ghz beats most Phenom quads at 3.6Ghz and lower, for the money your saving Athlon II will do everything a phenom will, apart from clock upto 4Ghz :)

I know why RJC is telling me Athlon II ;) but frozennova what kind of frames were you getting with the Athlon and the Phenom?

Seraph that's the thing, from what I've read the increase in performance scales well with the Phenom II as it's overclocked, and it can overclock higher, so I'm wondering what kind of difference I'll be "loosing out" on

to be honest, i dont think you'd be losing out on any performance, best runs for a Phenom II put it at 4Ghz for solid 24/7 running, and the athlon II at 3.8Ghz maybe pushing 3.9Ghz if under water and you have a very good chip, if you can notice 100-200Mhz difference then... well lol i dunno

Couldn't tell you in all honesty all my CPU benchmarks on done with folding@home and it was getting around 5% increase clock for clock and around 15-20% @ 4ghz over 3.6ghz on the Athlon II.

The Athlon II eventually primed for 8 hours @ 3.8ghz but died very shortly after as I chased the magic 4ghz on an Athlon

Have a gaming headset and some crappy Labtec 2.0s (1.5w each or something similarly poor).

And do most Athlons manage 3.8GHz 24/7 stable?

yup i've had mine stable at 1.5275Vcore, ya need top cooling towards 1.55vcore i got 30c idles with CnQ and 58 loads under a titan fenrir, it'd be cooler under megahelams or custom water :)
