Huge decisions to make.

I saw loads of ex-military while on an IT training course, they were all spending their money on MCSE training and being told companies love ex-military, and they would earn a fortune. They were cramming for exams to put on their CV and most had no experience and a few had little IT knowledge at all. The grass is not always greener.

Well i think im coming to a turning point to my life, I am now in my 13th year in the Army earn about 34k a year. I have a good chance of promotion this year just have to wait and see.

The thing is i have been thinking of leaving and doing something completely different. Have been looking at becoming a plumber, eventually self employed.
Do you think i'm mental?

I think anyone that wants to be a plumber is mental.

Something else, security related mabye?

What's the responsibility, benefits and salary increase of a sergeant's rank?

34k is a decent salary certainly when your overheads are likely to be lower?

I'd stick it out and try and go for the promotion if you can. :)

What about working for like a private security firm. Those companies latch on to ex-mil people and with 13yrs behind you I would say you stand a v good chance. Also maybe consider stuff like security advisor etc? But you have said you wanna try something totally different so good luck whatever you do :)

Sounds like a solution to me. :) What sort of promotion are you talking about? Is it a trivial one or does it actually start getting you places?

become a mercenary

....

Instead of going into plumbing you could ask to transfer to the RE and be a combat engineer or tradesman, that way you will be doing something slightly more relevant if you do want to change, something different from what you're currently doing but most importantly stay in a stable job with your current employer.

From what I've gathered from the army, they'd be happy to see you taking initiative like this (wanting to improve yourself) and would offer you the opportunity to do so. It's in their interest too.

This seems like the best option to me, should keep you in long enough to get a decent pension, steady employment meanwhile, while building up useful skills for employment in civillian life.

Remember as well that the stories about plumbers/tradesmen making £30/40/50k a year are mostly a load of bull. Most, with a few years of experience may be on mid 20s, unless of course your want to be doing 12+ hour days in the city, then you may be on the supposed salaries.

If you want to move because of the money, then its probably a bad idea.

But if you want to move because you want a change/feel you dont want to push your luck with the whole getting shot at thing, and wouldnt mind dropping quite a lot in wages, why not? It's your life dude :)
