Engine oil prices WTF

Quartz 7000 (Peugeot OE) is fine for road use.

Fast road and track no chance, it thins out way too much as the temperatures will rocket and you will end up with a lovely scrapped engine.

Put it this way, nobody on the owners forum will be using it in their track car.

I'm using 10/50 and Halfords don't sell it ;)

The only 10/40 they do sell is own brand, Magnetec or Mobil Super 2000 semi synth.

They do a 5/50 "Track day" oil, but it looks like my first oil change oil and I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole without ever hearing about it, plus its only £7 cheaper than known good stuff.

The cost doesn't outway the risk to me, there are plenty of others using fully synth oils with no issue. One person ran standard oil on a be it supercharged engine while he was running it in and it blew up. An extra £20 once or twice a year outweighs the risk of writing the car off as I wouldn't be forking out for a complete new engine and fitting.
Berger, I need new oil soon, what I was wondering is if I drive my car quite hard really in the scheme of things, is It worth me getting the 10w50 or is ot a case of its only better if you floor it 100% of the time
In other words , is there a downside to using this oil over what they recommend?

Not as much as it confuses you it seems - he posted this thread in August 2009, when I beleive a litre of unleaded fuel was 99p.

Actualy, average price was 104.9 and 74$ a barrel. I don't understand why sense there is in reviving a thread from 2009. Just start a new one.

lol you actually checked that? The clue is average, the thread itself shows supermarkets were selling at 99.9.

I wish, knowing this sort of stuff is indirectly linked to my job unfortunately :(

Would depend on your oil temperatures and its a personal choice really.

Lot of people using different brands and slightly different weights on the owners forum, best searching on there for advantages/disadvantages.

I think the problem with oil is that it is something that you cannot really appreciate the difference between what is a good oil from what is a bad oil until it is far too late, thats why people like to stick with a certain brand once they're confident that running it won't result in their engine committing suicide.

I ran 10-40w Mobil 1 in my '6 powered 205. No problems whatsoever on track, although I do understand that people nowdays suggest slightly thicker stuff (15-40w)?
