Most economical car for £1k (or less)

ec1 = Zero chance, on both a cost and time perspective.

You would have to add the cost of tubes on top of that and its just utterly impossible, unless you buy something really gay and new that produces flowers for emmisions and you have a private car park otherwise parking is £1 for 15 mins

I feel for you Mike, i really do, but driving to London everyday whilst staying sane and keeping your family close is pretty much unworkable.

Just looked up EC1 on google maps, it appears to be right by the Thames...

What about getting a speedboat and taking the scenic route past Dover? At least you could avoid the traffic then!

 Bit harsh considering he's only doing this to keep providing for his family and is obviously a bit desperate?

I don't think he meant it in a harsh way, rather that it couldn't really have been a much worse postcode in London to commute to from the Isle of Wight!

Does driving economically mean driving slowly? Will it still take only 2 hours to reach Central London?

that.

on a nice note. I have a space in E1W that I would rent out for £150 a month. could avoid congestion charging just by parking there.

That'd be a lovely place to be ;) If you were going to do that get a motorbike instead, at least then you could ride through the inevitable jams.

Actually a motorbike isn't a bad idea, better than my boat suggestion at least! ;) Do you have to pay a congestion charge for using a motorbike at all in the zone?

I've considered a motorbike - not sure how practical it'll be in nasty weather, though.

I was new to commuting with bike (oct, nov, dec 2010) and it was fine until temp hit minus figures. Rain is fine with a good wetsuit - i still used summer kit under it most the time. Wouldnt think you would want to do more than 1 hour each way on bike though.

If you've ever seen how bad the traffic is in London then you'll find a motorbike or even a scooter to be far faster than a car...

Also with a scooter your legs stay relatively dry when it rains... So don't rule out a 125 scooter or something like that...
